Iron Fallout Removal Checklist (Mar 2026)

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Iron Fallout Removal Checklist (Mar 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, if you live near a train line or a construction site, your car is copping a hiding from metal particles. I've seen brand new white Hiluxes covered in 'rail dust' after just a week. This guide is a quick hit-list to get that paint smooth again without making a mess of it in the Aussie sun.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Iron Remover — My go-to is Bowden’s Own Wheely Clean or Gtechniq W6. Don't bother with the cheap 'all-in-one' stuff from the servo.
High-pressure washer — A regular hose is okay, but you really want that pressure to blast the purple gunk off.
Wash mitt and two buckets — Standard safe wash setup. Never do this on a dirty car.
Quality Car Shampoo — Something pH neutral like Meguiar's Gold Class works a treat.
Soft wheel brush — For agitating the stubborn bits on the rims.
Nitrile gloves — This stuff smells like rotten eggs and it lingers on your skin for days. Trust me on this one.
Microfibre drying towel — A big, thirsty one. Don't use a chamois, they're old school and scratchy.
Shade or a gazebo — Essential. If this dries on the paint, you're in for a world of hurt.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Surface Temperature — Touch the bonnet. If it's hot, stop. Wait for it to cool down or you'll bake the chemicals into the clear coat.
Direct Sunlight — Check the sun's position. If you can't get under cover, wait until later in the arvo.
Wind Direction — Iron remover overspray is nasty. Make sure you aren't spraying into the wind (or towards the missus' clean washing).
Wheel Condition — If you've got aftermarket unlacquered aluminium wheels, check the bottle label first. Some products are too aggressive.

The Decon Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Clean Wash

Give the car a proper wash and dry. You want the iron remover hitting the metal particles, not sitting on top of red dust or road grime.

02

Sectional Spray

Work one panel at a time. Start with the wheels, then move to the tailgate and lower doors where the most fallout usually sits.

03

The Dwell Time

Wait 3-5 minutes. You'll see it turn purple (bleeding). This is the chemical reaction. I once did this on a black Commodore and couldn't see the 'bleed', keep a close eye.

04

Agitation (Optional)

If the wheels are filthy, give them a light scrub with your brush while the product is reacting. Don't let it dry out though!

05

The Big Rinse

Pressure wash the living daylights out of it. Rinse the panel, the gaps, the trim, and the ground. You don't want any residue left behind.

06

Final Contact Wash

Quickly wash the car again with your soapy mitt to neutralise any remaining chemicals. This is a step most blokes skip, but it's worth it.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
The 'Baggie' Test — Put your hand in a plastic sandwich bag and run it over the paint. If it still feels gritty, you might need a clay bar.
Trim Check — Check plastic trims for any white staining. If you find some, hit it with a trim restorer or more water immediately.
Wheel Nuts — Make sure no purple liquid is trapped in the lug nut holes. It can cause corrosion if left to sit.
05

A Few Truths

Look, truth be told, some people reckon you can just spray this on a dry car at the car wash. I wouldn't. I did that once on a hot day and it left streaks on the glass that took me hours to polish out. Also, don't expect this to remove bird snot or tree sap, it’s strictly for metal. For the organic stuff, you'll need a different kit. And yeah, that's pretty much it. Give it a crack and your paint will feel like glass again.

Watch Out

NEVER let iron remover dry on your paint, especially in Aussie heat. It can etch the surface and cost you a fortune in professional polishing to fix. Also, keep it off cheap plastic wraps or matte finishes unless the bottle explicitly says it's safe.
