The Weekly Maintenance Wash: Quick Checklist

A bad wash technique doesn't just leave water spots—it grinds dirt into your paint, creating swirl marks that cost hundreds to fix.

Don't let the Aussie sun bake those bird droppings into your clear coat. Follow this quick weekly routine to keep your daily driver looking mint without spending all Saturday on it.

The Weekly Maintenance Wash: Quick Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from dusty farm utes to high-end Ferraris, and the secret isn't some fancy $500 wax, it's consistency. This list is for the blokes and ladies who want a clean car every week without the fuss. It's Autumn now, so we're dealing with those nasty bat droppings and that lingering red dust that gets everywhere (trust me, once that red dirt settles in your seals, it's a nightmare to get out).

The Essentials Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Two 15L or 20L Buckets — One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt. Don't skip the grit guards if you can help it.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — I reckon the sponges from the servo are rubbish, they just drag dirt across the paint. Get a proper noodle mitt.
Dedicated Wheel Bucket & Brush — Never use your paint mitt on the wheels. Brake dust is sharp and will ruin your finish.
Quality pH Neutral Shampoo — Bowden's Own 'Nanolicious' or Meguiar's Gold Class are my go-tos for weekly washes.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — The 'twisted loop' style ones are absolute game changers. One towel should do the whole car.
Wheel Cleaner (Acid-Free) — I learned the hard way on a black Commodore, cheap acidic cleaners can stain your alloys if it's a hot day.
Glass Cleaner & Two Cloths — One to apply, one to buff dry. Streak-free is the goal here.
Tyre Shine/Dressing — Gives the car that 'just detailed' look. I prefer water-based so it doesn't sling down the doors.
02

The Pre-Start Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check Paint Temperature — If the bonnet is hot enough to fry an egg, do not start. Move it to the shade or wait for the arvo.
Inspect for 'Landmines' — Scan for bird or bat droppings. These need a soak first so you don't scratch the paint when wiping.
Windows and Sunroof Shut — Made this mistake once on the missus' car, soaked the leather seats. Never again.
Tyre Pressure Check — Since you're right there with the hose, may as well check the pressures while the rubbers are cold.

The 6-Step Weekly Routine

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Clean the wheels and tyres while they're cold. Use your dedicated wheel bucket so you don't get heavy brake dust on your paint mitt later.

02

The Big Rinse

Blast off the loose grit, red dust, and salt spray. Spend extra time in the wheel arches and along the sills where the road grime hides.

03

Contact Wash (Top-Down)

Lather up using the two-bucket method. Start at the roof and work your way down, rinsing your mitt in the clean water bucket after every panel.

04

Final Rinse

Flush all the soap out of the gaps, door handles, and mirrors. If the water is 'sheeting' off, you know your wax or coating is still working.

05

The Big Dry

Lay your drying towel flat and pull it across the panels. Don't scrub, let the microfibre do the work. This prevents those nasty swirl marks.

06

Glass and Tyres

Clean the windows inside and out. Finish by wiping some dressing onto the tyres. It's the 'suit and tie' for your car's look.

04

The 'She's Right' Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check Door Jambs — Quick wipe with a damp cloth. A customer once told me you can judge a person by their clean door jambs.
Mirror Drips — Wipe away those annoying water runs that come out from behind the wing mirrors.
Inspect for Stone Chips — Autumn roadworks are common, check for new chips that might need a touch-up before winter.

Watch Out

DON'T wash in direct midday sun. The soap will dry instantly and leave spots that are a nightmare to remove. Also, avoid dish soap like the plague, it'll strip any protection you've got and dry out your rubber seals. Stick to proper car wash.

Detailer's Secret

If you've got a leaf blower, use it to blow the water out of the lug nuts and badges. Saves you five minutes of chasing drips later on. Works a treat.
