Restoring Your Exhaust Tips To Chrome

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen some shockers over the years, especially on diesel 4x4s that have been through the red dust and back. If you've got a set of chrome or stainless tips, they're probably caked in carbon and road grime. This guide is a quick hit-list to get them back to a mirror finish without scratching the living daylights out of them. Trust me, it makes a massive difference to the overall look of the car.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated wheel bucket — Don't use your paint bucket; exhaust soot is nasty stuff.
All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) or Degreaser — I reckon Bowden's Own Orange Agent works a treat here.
Metal Polish — Autoglym Metal Polish or Meguiar's NXT Generation All Metal Polish are my go-tos.
0000 Super Fine Steel Wool — Only for heavy soot! (I learned this the hard way, never use coarse stuff).
Microfibre cloths — Use ones you're happy to chuck out afterwards.
Soft bristle brush — An old toothbrush or a dedicated wheel brush does the job.
Nitril gloves — Carbon soot is a pain to get out from under your fingernails.
Wheel sealant or wax — To help stop the soot sticking next time.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the exhaust stone cold? — If you've just come back from the servo, wait an hour. Burning your hand isn't fun.
Check the material — Are they chrome, stainless, or just painted black? Don't polish matte black tips!
Park in the shade — It's 40 degrees out; don't let your chemicals dry instantly on the metal.
Give it a quick visual — Check for deep pitting or rust. If it's rusted through, no amount of polishing will save it.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Initial Rinse

Blast the tips with the hose to get the loose grit off. If you've been doing outback runs, make sure that red dust is gone.

02

Degrease and Scrub

Spray your APC or degreaser liberally. Let it dwell for 2 minutes (don't let it dry!) then scrub with your brush to break down the carbon.

03

The Steel Wool Trick

If the soot is baked on, wet some 0000 steel wool with soapy water and gently rub. I once saved a mate's SS Commodore tips using this after he'd neglected them for years.

04

Dry Throroughly

Wipe the tips completely dry with a clean microfibre. You don't want any water spots messing with your polish.

05

Apply Metal Polish

Chuck a pea-sized amount of polish on a cloth and work it into the metal. You'll see the cloth turn black, that's a good sign it's working.

06

Buff to a Shine

Use a fresh microfibre to buff off the residue. Keep flipping the cloth to a clean side until it gleams like a mirror.

07

Seal the Deal

Apply a bit of wheel sealant or a ceramic spray. It makes the next wash heaps easier because the soot won't bond as hard.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check the underside — People always miss the bottom edge. Get down low and have a squiz.
Look for residue — Make sure you haven't left white polish crust in the rolled edges.
Check the inner rim — You don't need to go deep, but cleaning the first inch inside the pipe looks much more professional.

Watch Out

Avoid using steel wool on dark chrome or PVD coated tips, you'll strip the finish right off and it'll look rubbish. Also, keep your metal polish well away from plastic bumper trims; it'll stain them white and they're a nightmare to clean.

Pro Tip

If you're doing this on a Saturday arvo, do the exhaust last. There's no point getting them perfect just to spray wheel cleaner or dirt back onto them while you're doing the rest of the car.
