Restoring Dirty Door Panels and Interior Trim

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't ignore your door cards until they're grey and dusty. This checklist covers how to strip back red dust, skin oils, and salt spray to keep your interior looking factory fresh.

Restoring Dirty Door Panels and Interior Trim

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, most people just wipe the dash and call it a day, but the door panels take the most abuse. Between sweaty arms on the rest and red dust settling in the bins, they get filthy fast. I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from muddy LandCruisers to salty beach daily-drivers, and the process is pretty much the same. This is for the weekend warrior who wants a pro finish without spending all day on it.

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Interior All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) — I reckon Bowden’s Own 'Agent Orange' or 'Sublime' are top notch for Aussie conditions.
Soft Boar's Hair Brushes — Essential for getting into the window switch crevices and speaker grilles.
Microfiber Towels (at least 3) — One for wiping, one for drying, one for the protectant. Don't use the missus' good bath towels.
Scrub Pad or Magic Eraser — Use very lightly on scuff marks. Made this mistake on a black Commodore once, scrubbed too hard and ruined the texture.
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — To suck out the loose grit and that annoying red dust before you wet anything.
UV Protectant/Dressing — Something like Aerospace 303. Our UV is brutal; non-greasy is the way to go.
Steam Cleaner (Optional) — I use this for stubborn sunscreen marks. Sunscreen is a nightmare to get off black plastic.
Small Detail Pick or Toothpick — For that gunk that builds up in the seams of the armrest.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for electronics — Are there sensitive window switches or speakers? Don't go spraying liquid directly into them.
Test a hidden spot — Always test your cleaner on the very bottom of the door first to make sure it doesn't discolour the plastic.
Identify the material — Is it leather, vinyl, or hard plastic? (Hint: if it’s a modern Hilux, it’s mostly hard plastic).
Park in the shade — If the door is hot to the touch, your cleaner will flash off too fast and leave streaks. She'll be right if you wait for it to cool down.

The Step-By-Step Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Dry Vac

Vacuum the map pockets and speaker grilles thoroughly. If you wet red dust before vacuuming, you just create a muddy paste that's ten times harder to clear.

02

Agitate the Grime

Spray your APC onto your brush (not the door!) and work it into the plastic grain in circular motions. Focus on the armrest where skin oils build up.

03

The Wipe Down

Use a damp microfiber to wipe away the lifted dirt. I usually do this twice if the car has been out west near the dust.

04

Detail the Crevices

Wrap a thin microfiber over a credit card or use a detail brush to get into the seams around the door handle and lock switches.

05

Dry and Inspect

Use a fresh dry towel to buff the surface dry. Look for any patchy spots or leftover sunscreen marks (those white ghostly smudges).

06

Apply Protection

Apply a thin coat of UV protectant. This stops the Aussie sun from turning your black door cards grey over time. Buff to a matte finish.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Speaker grilles clear? — Check no white cleaner residue is stuck in the tiny holes.
Window switches functional? — Give 'em a quick flick to make sure they aren't sticky from the cleaner.
No greasy residue? — The armrest shouldn't feel slippery. If it does, give it another dry wipe.
Door jambs wiped? — A customer once called me back because I cleaned the door but left the jamb muddy. Do the right thing and wipe the edges.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'glossy' silicone-based dressings. Not only do they look cheap, but they attract dust like a magnet and reflect the sun right into your eyes while driving back from the beach. Also, be bloody careful with Magic Erasers on soft-touch plastics; they are basically sandpaper and will strip the finish right off if you're too aggressive.
