Pro Summer Interior Detail Checklist

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Summer in Oz is brutal on car cabins. Between 40-degree days and that fine red dust, your interior needs more than just a quick vacuum to survive the season.

Pro Summer Interior Detail Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years cleaning cabins in the Aussie heat, and let me tell you, February is the worst. This checklist is for when you're ready to move past the 'servo vacuum' and actually protect your dash from cracking or your leather from drying out. It's about deep cleaning that outback dust and sealing everything against the UV.

01

The Right Gear For The Job

What You'll Need

0/8
Boar's hair detailing brushes — Essential for flicking dust out of vents. Don't buy the cheap plastic ones; they scratch.
Quality APC (All Purpose Cleaner) — Dilute it 10:1. I reckon Bowden's Own 'Agent Orange' is a cracker for Australian grime.
Microfibre stash — You'll need at least 10. Once one is dirty, chuck it in the bin (or the wash). Don't cross-contaminate.
Steam cleaner or Extractor — If you've got kids or spillages, this is the only way to get the gunk out of the carpets.
Leather cleaner and conditioner — I swear by the Meguiar's Gold Class range for a quick hit, or Gtechniq for serious protection.
Aerospace 303 Protectant — This is non-negotiable for Aussie dashes. It's like SPF 50 for your plastic.
Glass cleaner (Ammonia-free) — Tint-safe is vital. I learned the hard way on a mate's GTS, ammonia will ruin expensive tint fast.
Compressed air or a 'Tornador' — To blow that fine red dust out from under the seats where the vacuum can't reach.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Never do an interior in direct sunlight. The chemicals dry too fast and leave nasty streaks.
Open all doors — Get some airflow. If you're using heavy cleaners in a closed car in Feb, you'll pass out.
Empty the bins — Check the door pockets for old snacks. Found a half-eaten meat pie once after a week in the sun... not a smell you forget.
Test spot — Always test your APC on a hidden bit of plastic first to make sure it doesn't discolour.
03

The Deep Clean Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Blow Out

Use compressed air or a high-powered blower to move all the dust from the nooks and crannies into the open. Start from the top and work down.

02

Dry Vacuum

Give it a proper once-over. Use the brush attachment for the carpets to agitate the sand and salt. Don't rush this part, it's the most important.

03

Hard Surface Scrub

Spray APC onto your brush, not the dash. Work it into the grain of the plastic, then wipe immediately with a clean microfibre. No dramas.

04

Leather Treatment

Clean the oils off with a dedicated leather cleaner. If it's looking 'shiny', it's actually dirty. Deep-cleaned leather should have a nice matte finish.

05

Glass and Tech

Two-cloth method for glass. One to apply, one to buff dry. Use a dry microfibre for screens to avoid moisture getting behind the LCD.

06

UV Protection

Apply your 303 or chosen sealant to the dash and door cards. This stops the sun from turning your interior into a cracked mess.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
Seat tracks — Check if there's still sand in the rails. It's a dead giveaway of a rush job.
Pedals — Give them a wipe. Just don't put any 'protectant' on them or your foot will slip off the brake.
Rear-view mirror — Everyone forgets the back of the mirror. It's always dusty.
Door jambs — Give them a quick wipe. A clean interior with filthy jambs looks unfinished.

Watch Out

Avoid 'glossy' silicone-based dressings on the dash. Not only do they look cheap, but the glare on the windscreen during a bright Aussie arvo is actually dangerous. Also, keep the moisture low near the roof lining, if you soak it, the glue will fail and you'll have a saggy ceiling within a month.
