Deep Cleaning Your Door Panels (Mar 2026)

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Door panels take a beating from Aussie sun, sweaty arms, and red dust. Here is exactly what you need to get them looking factory fresh without ruining the electronics.

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, door panels are the most touched part of your interior and usually the most neglected. Between the sunscreen stains and the red dirt trapped in the map pockets, they get pretty feral. This checklist is for anyone wanting to do a proper job before the winter rain sets in. I've done hundreds of these, and the trick is all in the prep and not soaking the switches.

01

A Quick Tip from the Trade

I learned the hard way on a black VE Commodore that you shouldn't just spray cleaner everywhere. I ended up shorting out the window switch and had to pay for a replacement. Nowadays, I always spray my brush, not the panel. Also, if you've got those white sunscreen marks, don't just scrub harder, you need a dedicated interior cleaner like Bowden's Own Agent Orange or even a bit of APC diluted down. Plain water won't touch 'em.

The Cleaning Process

01

Dry Vacuum

Vacuum the map pockets and speaker grilles thoroughly. If you wet red dust before vacuuming, you've just made mud that stains forever.

02

Agitate the Grime

Spray your cleaner onto the brush. Work in circular motions on the hard plastics and armrests. Use the toothbrush for the speaker mesh.

03

Wipe Down

Wipe away the lifted dirt with a damp microfibre. Don't let the cleaner dry on the surface, especially in the Aussie heat.

04

Detail the Switches

Use a dry or very slightly damp brush for window switches. I usually follow up with a quick blast of compressed air if I have it.

05

Apply Protection

Apply your UV protectant to a fresh cloth, wipe on evenly, then buff off with a dry side. This stops the dash from cracking in 40-degree weather.

Watch Out

Don't use silicone-based 'shiners'. In the hot sun, they can actually off-gas and create a film on your windscreen that's a nightmare to clean. Also, if you've got leather inserts, use a dedicated leather cleaner; APC can strip the natural oils and leave it feeling like cardboard.
