Monthly Deep Clean Checklist: Autumn Refresh

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Summer's done its worst to your paint with that brutal UV and those nasty bat droppings. Here is the exact checklist I use to get my customer's rigs back to showroom standard before the winter rain hits.

Monthly Deep Clean Checklist: Autumn Refresh

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, after 15 years in the trade, I've seen what an Australian summer does to a daily driver, it's not pretty. Between the red dust and the coastal salt, your car is basically under constant attack. This monthly deep clean isn't just about making it look 'schmick' for the Sunday drive, it's about protecting your investment from our harsh conditions. Grab a brew, get your gear sorted, and let's get stuck in.

01

The Essential Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Two 15L buckets with grit guards — Don't skip the guards. I once saw a bloke ruin a brand new Ranger's bonnet because he picked up a stone in his sponge.
Quality pH neutral wash (Bowden's Own Nanolicious is my go-to) — Avoid the cheap stuff at the servo; it strips your wax faster than a bushfire.
Iron remover / Decontaminant spray — Essential if you live near a train line or heavy industry.
Microfibre wash mitt — Throw those old sponges in the bin, mate. They're paint killers.
Dedicated wheel cleaner and soft brush — Brake dust is acidic; get it off before it pits the alloys.
Synthetic clay bar or clay mitt — For pulling out that baked-in grit and red dust.
High-quality sealant or wax — I reckon Meguiar's Ceramic Wax is great for quick, solid UV protection.
Large twisted-loop drying towel — Chamois are old school and usually leave marring. Get a proper towel.

Pre-Start Sanity Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Surface temperature check — Is the paint cool to the touch? If it's too hot to hold your hand on, don't even start.
Shade check — Are you out of direct sunlight? Water spots are a nightmare to polish out later.
Bird/Bat dropping inspection — Soak these first with a wet paper towel. Don't scrub 'em dry or you'll scratch the clear coat.
Window seal check — Make sure all the windows are up tight. Learned that the hard way on a customer's Merc eons ago.

The 8-Step Deep Clean Routine

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheel and Tyre Decon

Clean wheels first while the car is dry. Spray your iron remover, let it bleed purple, agitate with a brush, and rinse thoroughly. Don't let it dry!

02

The Big Rinse

Blast off the loose red dust and grit. Focus on wheel arches and underbody if you've been off-road recently. Get the worst of it off now.

03

Contact Wash (Two Bucket Method)

One bucket for soapy suds, one for rinsing your mitt. Work from the roof down. Honestly, this is the only way to prevent swirl marks on dark paint.

04

Chemical Decontamination

Spray iron remover on the paintwork. It'll find the hidden metallic fallout from the summer roads. Rinse it off after 2-3 minutes out of the sun.

05

Clay Bar Treatment

Glide a clay mitt over the lubricated paint. If it sounds like sandpaper, keep going until it's smooth as glass. This makes the wax stick properly.

06

Drying Phase

Pat the car dry with your large microfibre towel. Blowing out the mirrors and door handles with a leaf blower or air compressor saves those annoying drips.

07

UV Protection Application

Apply your sealant or wax. After 15 years, I've found that two thin coats are always better than one thick, smeary mess. Protect against that March sun.

08

Glass and Trim

Clean the glass inside and out. Hit the plastic trims with a UV protectant like Aerospace 303 so they don't turn grey and nasty.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check door jambs — Wipe away the leftover suds and red dust that hides in the hinges.
Inspect for streaks — Look at the paint from different angles. Use a fresh microfibre to buff any high spots.
Tyre shine check — Make sure it's dry before you drive off, otherwise it'll sling all over your clean guards.
Interior glass — The 'haze' from the dashboard outgassing in the heat is a killer for visibility. Wipe it twice.

Watch Out

Never, ever use dish soap on your car. It's a degreaser that'll kill your rubber seals and strip every bit of protection you've got. Also, if you drop your clay bar on the garage floor, chuck it in the bin immediately. It's now a piece of sandpaper.

Expert Tip

If you've been out near the coast, pay extra attention to the wiper cowl and the area under the boot lid where salt spray loves to settle and start the corrosion process.
