Keeping Your Leather From Cracking This Autumn

Cracked, faded leather isn't just ugly—it's your car losing value with every sunburn. Australian UV is brutal.

Don't let the Aussie sun turn your seats into cardboard. This quick checklist covers the gear and steps you need to deep clean and condition your leather before the winter chill sets in.

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, after 15 years in this game, I've seen too many high-end interiors ruined because someone ignored them for a single summer. Between the 40 degree days and that fine red dust that gets everywhere, our leather takes an absolute beating. This is a dead-simple checklist to get your interior supple again. Honestly, forget those 'all-in-one' wipes from the servo, they're useless. Stick to this gear and you'll be right.

01

The Right Gear (Don't Skimp Here)

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Leather Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own Leather Love is a cracker for most jobs.
PH-Neutral Leather Conditioner — Look for something with UV blockers. Gtechniq L1 is my go-to for real protection.
Horsehair Detail Brush — Essential for getting grime out of the grain. Don't use a stiff plastic brush.
Microfibre Applicator Pads — Two or three. One for cleaning, one for the cream.
Clean Microfibre Towels — At least 4. You'll need fresh ones to buff off the residue.
Vacuum with Soft Brush Attachment — To get the grit out of the seams so you don't scratch the hide.
Distilled Water — Good for a final damp wipe if you're in a high-salt coastal area.
Painter's Tape — Optional, but handy for masking off any Alcantara or suede inserts.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for Perforations — If you've got cooled/heated seats, don't spray product directly onto the holes.
The 'Spit' Test — Or just a drop of water. If it soaks in fast, your leather is thirsty and needs double conditioning.
Temperature Check — Touch the leather. If it's hot to the touch from sitting in the sun, move to the shade and wait. (Made this mistake on a black Commodore once, the cleaner dried instantly and left a nasty streak).
Hidden Spot Test — Test your cleaner on a tiny patch under the seat first to make sure the dye doesn't lift.
03

The Method

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Vacuum

Get right into the bolsters and seams. Red dust acts like sandpaper on leather stitching, so suck it all out before you start rubbing.

02

Agitate the Grime

Apply cleaner to your brush, not the seat. Work in small sections using circular motions. You'll see the foam turn grey as the oils lift.

03

The Wipe Down

Use a damp microfibre to wipe away the dirty suds. Don't let it dry on the surface or you're just moving dirt around.

04

Apply Conditioner

Massage the conditioner into the leather using an applicator. Be thorough but don't drown it. A little bit usually goes a long way.

05

Let it Dwell

Give it 10-15 minutes to soak in. This is the perfect time to go grab a cold one while the UV blockers do their thing.

06

Final Buff

Take a clean, dry microfibre and buff the entire surface. This removes excess oils so your pants don't slide off the seat during the first corner.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Uniform Finish — Ensure there are no shiny patches or greasy streaks.
Seam Check — Make sure no white cream residue is stuck in the stitching or perforations.
The Feel Test — The leather should feel supple and 'grippy', not oily or slick.

Watch Out

Stay away from silicone-based protectants. They give a cheap, greasy shine that actually attracts more dust and cooks the leather in the Aussie heat. Also, if you've got modern 'vegan leather' (it's just vinyl, let's be honest), don't bother with heavy oils, use a dedicated synthetic protectant like Aerospace 303 instead.
