Keeping Your Leather From Cracking In The Aussie Sun (Mar 2026)

Cracked, faded leather isn't just ugly—it's your car losing value with every sunburn. Australian UV is brutal.

Don't let the harsh UV turn your seats into cardboard. This checklist covers the gear and steps you need to deep clean and condition your leather properly.

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many high-end rigs with leather that looks like a dried-up riverbed because the owner ignored it for a summer. Between the 40 degree heat and that fine red dust that gets everywhere, our leather takes a beating. This is a quick checklist to get your interior supple again before the winter chill sets in. Truth be told, it's easier than you think if you've got the right gear.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Leather Cleaner — I reckon Bowden’s Own Leather Love is a cracker for regular use.
Quality Leather Conditioner — Use something with UV blockers. Gtechniq L1 is my go-to for real protection.
Horsehair Detail Brush — Don't use a stiff plastic brush, you'll score the finish. Ask me how I know.
3-4 Microfibre Towels — Clean ones only. I once used a greasy rag by mistake on a white Range Rover, painful lesson.
Soft Foam Applicator Pad — For spreading the conditioner evenly without wasting product.
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — Crucial for getting the red dust out of the seams.
Distilled Water — Just in case you need to dampen a cloth for a final wipe.
Toothpicks or Cotton Buds — For getting old wax or gunk out of the perforated holes.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for 'Real' vs Synthetic — If it's vegan leather or vinyl, don't waste expensive conditioner on it. Use a protectant instead.
Test Spot — Find a hidden bit under the seat. Some cheap dyes bleed when you hit them with cleaner.
Surface Temp — If the car's been sitting in the sun, let it cool down. Hot leather soaks up cleaner too fast.
Empty the Pockets — Check for loose change or pens in the seat cracks. Pens are the enemy.

The Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Vacuum

Get right into the bolsters and seams. Red dust acts like sandpaper on the stitching if you leave it there while scrubbing.

02

Clean the Surface

Spray cleaner onto your brush, not the seat. Work in small sections using circular motions to lift the skin oils and grime.

03

Wipe Dry

Use a fresh microfibre to buff away the lifted dirt immediately. Don't let the cleaner dry on the leather or it'll leave streaks.

04

Apply Conditioner

Chuck a small amount onto your foam pad. Massage it in gently. Think of it like sunscreen, you want a thin, even layer.

05

Dwell Time

Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. In our heat, it absorbs quick, but give it a moment to actually penetrate the pores.

06

Final Buff

Take a clean microfibre and wipe off any excess. You want a matte, factory look, not a greasy '90s used car lot' shine.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check the Stitching — Make sure no white residue is caught in the threads.
Uniformity Check — Look at the seat from different angles to ensure you didn't miss any dry spots.
The 'Feel' Test — Should feel smooth and soft, not sticky or slippery. If it's slippery, you've used too much.

A Few Detailing Secrets

Honestly, don't bother with those '2-in-1' cleaner and conditioner sprays. They're usually rubbish. It's like trying to wash your hair and style it at the same time. Also, if you've got perforated seats, go easy on the liquid or you'll clog the holes with white gunk. If that happens, a quick blast with an air compressor usually sorts it out.

Watch Out

NEVER use household cleaners or 'magic erasers' on car leather. A mate of mine used a kitchen degreaser once and it literally stripped the top coat off his Maloo. Also, stay away from silicone-based protectants from the servo, they'll just bake your leather in the sun.
