Keeping the Dust and Red Dirt at Bay

Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

When the summer heat hits 40 degrees and the red dust starts blowing, your paint takes a beating. Here is my go to checklist for sealing up your rig before a big trip or just surviving the Aussie summer.

Keeping the Dust and Red Dirt at Bay

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I have spent 15 years cleaning red dust out of crevices you wouldn't believe. After a mate brought me his LandCruiser back from a Simpson crossing looking more orange than a Fanta, I realised most people skip the prep. This guide is about creating a slick barrier so the dust actually slides off instead of grinding into your clear coat. It is practical, fast, and works for both city drivers and outback tourers.

01

The Essential Dust-Busting Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
High-quality PH neutral car wash — I reckon Bowden's Own Nanolicious is the best for this heat.
Synthetic Clay Mitt or Bar — Essential to get the grit off before you seal it.
Si02 Ceramic Spray or Sealant — Gtechniq C2 is my go-to. It's slippery as anything.
4-5 Clean Microfibre Towels — Don't use the ones the missus uses for the kitchen.
Rubber Seal Conditioner — Stops the dust getting inside the cabin.
Large Drying Towel — Something like the Big Green Sucker works a treat.
Detailing Brush — For getting dust out of the window seals.
Wheel Cleaner (Acid-free) — Keep that brake dust from baking on in the sun.
02

Before You Pick Up The Hose

What You'll Need

0/4
Check panel temperature — If it burns your hand, don't touch it with soap.
Park in full shade — The arvo sun will bake your sealant before you can buff it.
Check for bat droppings — Get these off first with a bit of quick detailer.
Shut all windows and vents — Made this mistake on a black Commodore once, interior was soaked.
03

The Step-by-Step Protection Plan

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Pressure Wash

Blast every bit of grit out of the wheel arches and door shuts. Don't be shy with the water here.

02

Two-Bucket Wash

Wash from top to bottom. If you're in a hard water area, move fast so you don't get water spots.

03

Decontamination

Run a clay mitt over the paint. If it feels like sandpaper, you're doing it right. It should feel glass-smooth when finished.

04

The Dry Down

Dry the car completely. Use a leaf blower for the mirrors and badges if you've got one. Water is the enemy of sealant.

05

Apply the Base Layer

Mist your Si02 sealant onto a microfibre, wipe on a panel, and buff off immediately. Don't let it sit too long in the heat.

06

Seal the Door Rubbers

Apply conditioner to all door and boot seals. This creates the vacuum seal that keeps the fine red dust out of your carpet.

04

The 'She's Right' Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for streaking — Look at the panels from an angle in the light.
The 'Slickness' Test — A clean microfibre should slide off the bonnet by itself.
Glass check — Make sure no sealant overspray is left on the windscreen.
Trim check — Wipe any white wax marks off black plastic bits.

Watch Out

Look, whatever you do, do NOT use dish soap. It strips the oils out of your paint and makes dust stick like glue. Also, if you're heading outback, wait 24 hours for the sealant to cure before you hit the dirt, otherwise the dust will bond to the fresh layer and you'll have a nightmare on your hands.
05

A Quick Word on Wax

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with traditional Carnauba wax in a 40-degree Aussie summer. It literally melts. Stick to the synthetic sealants or ceramic sprays. I've seen blokes spend hours polishing with wax only for it to go 'soft' at the servo in Alice Springs and attract every bit of dust in the territory. Stick to the Si02 stuff, it's tougher.
