Keeping Matte Paint Fresh in the Aussie Heat

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Matte finishes are a nightmare if you treat them like normal paint. This checklist covers exactly how to clean your matte or satin rig without ruining the finish or causing permanent glassy spots.

Keeping Matte Paint Fresh in the Aussie Heat

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, matte paint looks killer, but it's bloody temperamental. Unlike a standard clear coat, you can't just polish out a scratch or a bird dropping mark. This guide is for the blokes and ladies dealing with matte wraps or factory finishes in the middle of a 40-degree Feb summer. Follow this so you don't end up with a shiny patch on your bonnet that'll haunt your dreams.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Matte-specific Shampoo — Use something like Bowden's Own Nanolicious or Chemical Guys Meticulous Matte. No waxes or gloss enhancers!
Two 15L Buckets with Grit Guards — Non-negotiable. One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Get a high-quality one. I once used a cheap sponge on a matte C63 and nearly cried when I saw the marring.
Dedicated Matte Detailer — Dr. Beasley’s or Gtechniq Matte Dash (for trim). Great for bird bomb emergencies.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — Plush is best. Don't use a chamois, they drag too much.
pH Neutral Wheel Cleaner — Keep it off the paint if you can. Iron removers are okay but rinse fast.
Soft Detailing Brush — For getting red dust out of the badges and trim gaps.
Distilled Water (Optional) — If you're in a hard water area, a final splash prevents spots.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the panel cool to the touch? — In Feb, if it's been in the sun, forget it. You'll bake water spots into the finish instantly.
Are you in the shade? — Find a carport or wait until the arvo. Direct sun is the enemy of matte finishes.
Check for 'Bird Bombs' or Bat Poo — If there's dried gunk, don't scrub. Soak it first with a wet microfibre.
Remove jewellery — A ring scratch on matte paint is a permanent 'feature'. Ask me how I know.

The Step-by-Step Wash

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Heavy Pressure Rinse

Blast off the loose red dust and coastal salt. Spend 5 minutes just rinsing. Getting the grit off now prevents scratches later.

02

Snow Foam (If you have it)

Chuck a matte-safe foam on and let it dwell for 4 minutes. It lifts the nasty stuff without you touching the paint.

03

Two-Bucket Wash

Start from the top down. Use zero pressure, let the mitt do the work. Rinse the mitt in the plain water bucket after every panel.

04

Final Low-Pressure Rinse

Take the nozzle off the hose and let the water 'sheet' off. This leaves less water on the car to dry and spot.

05

Pat Dry Only

Don't rub the towel. Lay it flat over the panel and pat it. Rubbing creates friction, and friction creates unwanted shine over time.

04

A Quick Real-World Tip

I had a customer bring in a matte grey Ranger that he'd taken through a local servo brush wash. Big mistake. The brushes are basically sandpaper and they'd 'polished' the corners of his flares. Once matte paint goes shiny, it's game over. You can't un-polish it. Honestly, if you're too tired to hand wash, just use a DIY pressure wand bay and skip the 'brush' and 'wax' settings.
05

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check door shuts and fuel cap — Red dust loves hiding here and then running out down your clean panels.
Look for water streaks — Catch them with a matte quick detailer before they bake on.
Tyre Shine check — If you use tyre shine, don't sling it onto the paint. I prefer a matte tyre dressing anyway.

Watch Out

NEVER use wax, polish, or any mechanical buffing machine on matte paint. You will permanently change the texture and it'll look like a dog's breakfast. Also, avoid 'Wash and Wax' soaps from the supermarket, they'll leave streaks that are a nightmare to strip off.
