Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, cleaning glass sounds easy until you're driving into a low autumn sun and can't see a bloody thing because of the smeary mess on your dash. I've spent 15 years chasing the perfect finish, and truth be told, most people overcomplicate it. This is for anyone from the weekend warrior to the bloke who just wants to see out of his 4x4 after a dusty run.

01

The Glass Struggle is Real

There is nothing worse than a 'clean' car with hazy windows. I learned this the hard way when I was starting out on a black Commodore, I thought I'd done a mint job until the customer drove off into the sunset and came straight back because he couldn't see out the front! Between the red dust out west and the salt spray on the coast, our glass coppers a beating. Here is how I get it right every single time.

Ditch the Ammonia

First thing, check your spray. If it's got ammonia (like some of the cheap supermarket stuff), chuck it in the bin. It'll perish your rubber seals and, more importantly, it'll ruin your window tint faster than a summer arvo in Marble Bar. My go-to is Bowden's Own Naked Glass or Meguiar's Perfect Clarity. They're tint-safe and don't leave that nasty film.

The Two-Towel Method

This is the only way I trust for a streak-free finish. You need two clean microfibres. One for the 'wet' wipe to lift the grime, and a second bone-dry one to buff it off immediately. If you let the cleaner dry on the glass in 35-degree heat, you're gonna have a bad time. Buff it till it's slick.

Fight the 'Out-Gassing' Fog

That greasy film on the inside of your windscreen? That's actually plastic vapours from your dash cooking in the Aussie sun. It's a nightmare to shift. I reckon the trick is to use a dedicated glass scrub or even a bit of clay bar on the inside if it's really stubborn. Your partner will thank you when they aren't squinting through a fog at night.

Directional Wiping

Pro tip: wipe the outside horizontally and the inside vertically. Why? Because when you see a streak later (and you probably will, we're only human), you'll know exactly which side of the glass it's on. Saved me heaps of time over the years, especially on big SUVs.

The Bare Essentials

Watch Out

Never, ever clean your glass in direct sunlight if you can help it. The product flashes off too fast and leaves spots that are a dog to remove. Also, don't use paper towels, they're abrasive and leave little white fluff balls everywhere. Use a proper cloth.
