Fast Summer Interior Maintenance Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many cracked dashes on three-year-old Hiluxes because people ignore them in February. Between the 40-degree heat and the salt air if you're near the coast, your interior is basically an oven. This checklist is what I do for my own rig to keep it fresh without spending all Saturday on it.

01

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
High-quality vacuum — With a crevice tool for those annoying crumbs between the seats.
3-4 Microfibre cloths — Use the 300gsm ones. Don't use the missus's good tea towels, she'll kill ya.
Interior Detailer (UV Rated) — I reckon Bowden's Own Inner Detailer is the go-to for our sun.
Soft bristled brush — A cheap 1-inch paintbrush works wonders for dusting vents.
Glass cleaner — Ammonia-free so you don't melt your tint (trust me on this).
Leather conditioner (if applicable) — Keep it supple or it'll crack like a dry creek bed.
STIFF carpet brush — Essential if you've been to the beach or out in the red dirt.
A small bin bag — For all the servo receipts and Maccas bags clogging the door pockets.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Never clean a hot interior. Products will streak and dry before you can wipe 'em.
Open all doors — Get some airflow. If you've had a damp towel in there, the smell will be rank.
Check for 'surprises' — Look for forgotten chocolate or crayons. I once found a melted block of Cadbury in a black Commodore, took hours to fix.
Empty the pockets — Chuck all the loose change and rubbish into a pile first.

The Weekly Routine

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Blow Out

Open the doors and use your brush to flick dust out of the vents and buttons. Don't skip the cup holders, they're usually feral.

02

High-Power Vacuum

Send the vacuum over the seats and carpets. Give the mats a good bash against a wall first to loosen that stubborn Aussie grit.

03

UV Protection Wipe

Spray your detailer onto the cloth, not the dash. Wipe every plastic surface to kill the static and add a layer of SPF protection.

04

Steering Wheel & Touchpoints

Clean the wheel, gear stick, and door handles twice. These get the most sweat and oils, especially when it's 40 degrees outside.

05

Glass and Mirrors

Wipe the inside of the windscreen. That 'haze' you see is actually outgassing from the plastics. Two cloths: one to apply, one to buff dry.

06

Door Jams

Quick wipe of the metal bits inside the door frame. If you live near the coast, salt builds up here and starts the rust rot early.

Pro Tip for Red Dust

If you've been out west and the red dust is everywhere, use a damp (not soaking) microfibre first. If you just vacuum, you'll never get it all. The stuff is like talcum powder and sticks to everything.
04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
No streaks on the infotainment screen — Use a dry microfibre for a final buff.
Floor mats re-secured — Make sure they aren't bunched under the pedals (unsafe as).
Sunshade installed — If you aren't using a sunshade in Feb, you're asking for a cracked dash.
Fresh scent — Give it a spray of something nice, or just enjoy the 'clean' smell.

Watch Out

Avoid silicone-based 'shiny' protectants from the servo. They act like a magnifying glass for the sun and will cook your dashboard over time. Also, never use glass cleaner on your clear instrument cluster plastic, it'll scratch if you even look at it wrong.
