Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Don't let the Aussie sun turn your pride and joy into a cracked, dusty mess. Here is how to protect your dash, seats, and trim from 40 degree heat and outback dust.

Keeping Your Interior From Melting This Summer (Feb 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, February in Australia is a absolute killer for car interiors. Between the UV rays trying to crack your dash and that fine red dust getting into every crevice, your cabin takes a beating. I've put together some quick wins to keep things fresh, even if you're parked out in the sun all day at the beach or the job site.

01

Summer is the Enemy

Most blokes worry about the paint, but honestly, the interior is where you actually spend your time. I've seen too many classic Commodores with 'dashboard canyons' because they weren't protected. After 15 years in the trade, I reckon February is the month that does the most damage. It's not just the 40 degree heat; it's the salt air if you're near the coast and that bloody red dust that acts like sandpaper on your leather. Let's get it sorted before the damage is permanent.

Ditch the Silly Silicone Sprays

Stop using those cheap, greasy 'protectants' from the servo that make your dash look like a mirror. They actually attract dust and can even accelerate cracking under intense UV. I always tell my customers to use something like Bowden’s Own Vinyl Care or Aerospace 303. They leave a factory matte finish and actually have proper UV blockers. I learned this the hard way when a customer's windscreen kept fogging up from the 'off-gassing' of a cheap greasy spray I used back in my rookie days.

The 'Sunshade' is Your Best Mate

It sounds basic, but a high-quality, thick sunshade is the single best thing you can do. It drops the cabin temp by 10-15 degrees easily. If you've got leather seats, it stops them from getting hot enough to cook an egg on, too. (The missus will definitely thank you for that one). Don't buy the $5 flimsy ones; get the custom-fit ones that actually cover the edges of the glass.

Hydrate the Leather

Leather is skin, right? In this heat, it dries out and shrinks, which leads to those nasty cracks on the bolsters. I give my seats a quick wipe with a dedicated conditioner every few weeks in summer. I'm a big fan of Gtechniq L1 Leather Guard because it adds a bit of moisture but also stops your jeans from staining the leather if you're a bit sweaty after a day out.

Crack the Windows (Just a Bit)

If you're parked in a safe spot, leave the windows down about 1-2cm. It stops the 'oven effect' where heat builds up and starts melting the adhesives in your roof lining. I once had a client with a beautiful Euro hatch where the headliner just sagged overnight because the heat was trapped inside during a week of 42 degree days in Perth. No dramas if you've got weather shields, too, keeps the rain out if a summer storm rolls in.

The Summer Interior Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
Quality Sunshade — The thicker the better.
Matte UV Protectant — Look for 303 or Bowden's.
Microfibre Cloths — Keep a clean one in the glovebox for dust.
Soft Detailing Brush — Essential for flicking red dust out of vents.
Window Cleaner — Heat causes 'vinyl fog' on the inside of the glass.

Watch Out

Never leave aerosol cans (deodorant, tyre shine, etc.) or lighters in the car during February. I've seen a can of fix-a-flat explode in a hot boot and it's not a cheap cleanup. Also, avoid using baby wipes on your interior, the chemicals in them can strip the top coat off your leather and plastics over time.
03

Common Summer Gripes

How do I get red dust out of the carpet?
Don't just vacuum. You need to hit the carpet with a massage gun or a stiff brush while the vacuum is running to vibrate the particles to the surface. That outback dust is heavy and sinks deep.
My dash is already sticky, what do I do?
That's the plastic breaking down. You can try a mild APC (All Purpose Cleaner) to clean it, but usually, it's a sign the UV has won. Put a dash mat over it and call it a day!
Does window tint actually help?
100%. If you haven't got a high-quality ceramic tint, you're doing it wrong. It blocks the IR (heat) and almost all the UV. It's the best money you'll ever spend on your car.
