Essential Soft Top Care for the Aussie Sun

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many expensive European soft tops ruined by our brutal sun and bird lime. Honestly, if you leave bat droppings on a fabric roof for more than a day in 40-degree heat, you're looking at a permanent stain. This guide is for anyone wanting to keep their ragtop looking mint, whether you're dealing with coastal salt or that fine outback dust that gets into every fiber.

01

Don't ignore the roof

I learned this the hard way when I bought a second-hand MX-5 that had been parked under a gum tree for six months. The sap had basically turned the fabric into concrete. To be honest, most people neglect their soft tops until they start leaking, but a bit of maintenance now saves you thousands on a replacement later.

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Fabric Cleaner — I reckon Bowden’s Own 'Fabratection' or the Autoglym Soft Top kit are the best bets for our conditions.
Soft Horsehair Brush — Don't use a stiff nylon brush; you'll fray the fibers. Treat it like a fancy suit.
Fabric Protectant/Sealant — A high-quality UV-rated sealant is non-negotiable in Australia. Gtechniq Smart Fabric is my go-to.
Low-tack Painter's Tape — For masking off the glass and rubber. Trust me, getting sealant off glass is a nightmare.
Microfibre Towels — Grab a clean stack. You'll need them for patting the fabric dry.
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — Essential for getting that fine red dust out before you get it wet.
Lint Roller — The missus might wonder where it went, but it's perfect for picking up stray hairs and fluff.
Plastic Drop Sheets — To cover the rest of the car. Over-spray from the water-proofer is a pain to clean off paint.
03

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the weather — You need at least 24 hours of dry weather for the sealant to cure. Don't risk a sudden arvo storm.
Work in the shade — Never do this in direct sunlight. The cleaner will dry too fast and leave nasty streaks.
Inspect for tears — Check the seams. If it's already ripping, a pressure washer will make it ten times worse.
Clean the drain holes — Usually located near the seatbelts or B-pillar. If these are blocked, your footwells will turn into a swamp.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Extraction

Vacuum the roof thoroughly while it's dry. Use the brush attachment to agitate the dust. This gets the red dirt out instead of turning it into mud.

02

Gentle Rinse

Wet the roof with a low-pressure hose. Avoid hitting the seals directly with a pressure washer, I've seen many interiors soaked by an over-eager spray.

03

Agitate with Cleaner

Spray your fabric cleaner evenly. Work in small sections using the horsehair brush in circular motions. Focus on areas with bird droppings or green mould.

04

Rinse and Dry

Rinse until the water runs clear of suds. Pat the roof dry with clean microfibres. Let it air dry completely, it must be bone dry before sealing.

05

Masking and Protection

Cover your windows and paint with plastic. Apply the protectant in thin, even coats. Two light coats are always better than one heavy, splotchy one.

05

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Uniform Colour — Check that the roof looks the same shade all over once dry.
Beading Test — Wait 24 hours, then flick a few drops of water on it. It should bead up like a duck's back.
Seal Check — Make sure no cleaner residue is stuck in the rubber seals around the windows.

Watch Out

Never, ever take a soft top through an automatic car wash with those spinning brushes. They'll chew the fabric and thrash the rear window. Also, avoid using household dish soap; it strips the natural oils out of the canvas and makes it brittle in the UV.

A Pro's Advice

If you've got a stubborn stain from a bat or a bird, don't scrub it like crazy. Soak a microfibre in warm water and the cleaner, lay it over the spot for 10 minutes to soften it up, then gently wipe. It works a treat and saves the fabric.
