Clear Vision: Windscreen Treatments That Actually Work

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Sick of wipers that smear and bugs that won't budge? A solid glass sealant is the cheapest safety upgrade you can give your rig before the autumn rains hit.

Clear Vision: Windscreen Treatments That Actually Work

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, clear glass is probably the most underrated part of car care, but it's the most important for staying safe. Whether you're dodging roos at dusk or dealing with a sudden coastal downpour, you need water to bead off and bugs to stop sticking. I've spent 15 years testing everything from basic sprays to high-end ceramics, so let's get your glass sorted properly.

01

Why Bother With Glass Treatments?

Most people wait until they're stuck in a tropical downpour to realise their wipers are buggered and their glass is filthy. After a long Aussie summer, your windscreen is usually baked with dried salt, red dust, and bug guts that feel like concrete. Just hitting it with the servo squeegee doesn't cut it. A proper repellent makes water fly off at 60km/h so you barely need your wipers. Plus, it stops those nasty bat droppings from etching into the glass when the sun is hitting 40 degrees.

Tip 1: The 'Squeaky Clean' Test

Before you put any repellent on, the glass has to be surgically clean. I learned this the hard way when I slapped a coating on a mate's Hilux without deep cleaning it first, it smeared like crazy for months. Use a dedicated glass polish or even a clay bar first. If you pour water on the glass and it 'sheets' off in one big piece rather than beading, you're ready. My go-to for this is Bowden’s Own Glass Freak, it doesn't leave those annoying streaks.

Tip 2: Combatting the Red Dust

If you're heading outback, red dust is your worst enemy. It gets under the wiper blades and acts like sandpaper. Once those fine scratches are there, your repellent won't work properly. I always reckon you should wipe your wiper blades with a damp cloth every single time you wash the car. You'd be surprised how much black gunk and grit comes off them.

Tip 3: Avoid the Cheap Supermarket Sprays

Don't waste your money on those $10 'rain spray' bottles from the grocery store. They last one wash and then start ghosting (that white haze you see when the wipers pass). For the Aussie sun, you want a proper ceramic glass coating like Gtechniq G1 or Meguiar's Glass Sealant. I put G1 on the missus' car over a year ago and it's still beading like the day I did it. It handles the UV way better than the old-school silicone stuff.

Tip 4: Dealing with the Autumn Bug Smash

Autumn in regional areas means bugs everywhere. A good treatment creates a 'non-stick' layer. Instead of scrubbing like a madman and scratching the glass, you can usually just hose the bug guts off. A customer once brought in a car that had been up the coast and the bugs were literally baked on. If I hadn't treated it previously, I'd have been there for hours with a razor blade.

Your Glass Kit Essentials

What You'll Need

0/5
Fine Grade Clay Bar — To pull out the embedded grit and salt.
IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) Wipe — Essential to strip old wax so the treatment actually sticks.
Quality Glass Sealant — Choose a ceramic-based one for 6+ months of protection.
Waffle Weave Microfibre — Better than standard towels for a streak-free finish.
Fresh Wiper Blades — No point treating glass if your wipers are torn and shitty.

Watch Out

Don't apply these treatments in direct sunlight! If the glass is hot to the touch, the product will flash off too fast and leave high spots that are a nightmare to buff out. Wait until the evening or do it in the garage. Also, never use dish soap to clean your glass, it leaves a film that'll make the repellent fail in a week.
03

Common Questions

Why do my wipers chatter after applying a treatment?
Usually, it's because you've got a build-up of product on the wipers themselves or the glass wasn't clean enough. Give the wiper blades a wipe with some IPA and it usually fixes the 'judder'.
Can I use this on my side mirrors too?
100%. I actually reckon it's more important on mirrors because they don't have wipers. It keeps them clear so you can actually see what's in your blind spot during a storm.
How often should I reapply?
If you're using a proper ceramic coating, once a year is plenty. If you're using a cheaper sealant, give it a top-up every 3 months or after a big road trip through the dust.

Final Thought

Anyway, give it a crack this weekend. It’s one of those jobs that takes 20 minutes but makes a massive difference the next time you're stuck in a storm on the M1. Catch ya!
