Crystal Clear Glass: The No-Streak Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Hazy glass isn't just ugly, it's dangerous when you're driving into that blinding Aussie sunset. Here is exactly what you need to get your windows invisible without the frustration of streaks.

Crystal Clear Glass: The No-Streak Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years cleaning windows and I'll tell you right now: most blokes overcomplicate it. Whether you've got red dust from a trip out west or salt spray from the coast, the secret is in the towels and the technique. This checklist is what I use in my own mobile detailing kit to get a perfect finish every single time (the missus even makes me do the house windows now, which I definitely regret starting).

01

The Right Gear (Don't Skimp Here)

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Glass Cleaner — Stick to Bowden's Own Naked Glass or Meguiar's Perfect Clarity. Avoid anything with ammonia if you have tint.
4-5 Waffle Weave Microfibres — These are non-negotiable. Flat towels just smear the grime around. Trust me on this.
— Only for the exterior if you've got baked-on bug guts from a highway run. Never use on the inside!
Distilled Water — If you're in a hard water area, use this for a final wipe. Tap water leaves spots.
Clay Bar or Mitt — Crucial for removing that crusty salt spray and fallout that a spray won't touch.
Reach Tool — For those impossible-to-reach corners of the windscreen where your hand doesn't fit.
Scrub Pad (Fine) — A bug sponge or fine grade steel wool (ONLY on non-tinted exterior glass) for the stubborn bits.
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) — Great for stripping old wax or oily film before you start your main clean.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check Glass Temperature — If the glass is hot to the touch, stop. It'll flash dry and streak instantly. Move to the shade.
Inspect for Chips — Found a crack? Don't spray cold cleaner on it if the car is hot, or it might spread.
Wind the Windows Down — Check the very top edge of the glass where it sits in the seal. It’s always filthy there.
Lift the Wipers — Clean the blades themselves with a bit of cleaner. No point having clean glass if the wipers are greasy.
03

The Step-By-Step Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Heavy Lift

Spray your cleaner liberally on the exterior. Use a clay bar if the glass feels 'gritty' from red dust or salt. Rinse and dry.

02

The Two-Towel Method

Spray cleaner onto your first waffle weave towel, not the glass. Wipe the surface thoroughly to break down the oils and grime.

03

The Buff

Immediately follow with a clean, bone-dry microfibre. Buff in circular motions until the haze disappears. This is where the magic happens.

04

Interior Attack

For the inside, spray the towel away from the dash to avoid overspray. Use the reach tool for the base of the windscreen.

05

The 'Box' Technique

Clean the edges first, then fill in the middle. I learned this the hard way, it prevents dragging dirt from the seals back onto the clean glass.

04

Final Inspection (The Detailer's Secret)

What You'll Need

0/3
The Opposite Direction Wipe — Wipe exterior vertically and interior horizontally. If you see a streak, you'll know exactly which side it's on.
Check Under Different Light — Use a torch or move the car into the sun. Shadows hide the worst streaks.
Door Jamb Check — Make sure no cleaner dripped onto your door cards or upholstery. Wipe it off now.

Watch Out

Never use glass cleaner on your instrument cluster or 'piano black' interior trim. Those plastics are softer than butter and will scratch or fog up permanently. Also, if you've got aftermarket tint, stay away from anything containing ammonia (like the cheap supermarket stuff) or you'll be watching your tint turn purple and bubble in the Aussie sun.

Quick Professional Tip

Honestly, if you're struggling with that oily film on the inside of the windscreen (the 'off-gassing' from the plastics), use a tiny bit of Mr. Sheen or a dedicated glass polish first. A customer once brought in a car that smelled like a pub and had a centimetre of nicotine film, a regular spray didn't touch it, but a glass polish cut right through.
