Clear Glass and Water Repellents: The Rainy Season Prep

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Getting your windscreen sorted before the autumn rains hit is a no-brainer. This checklist covers how to deep clean and seal your glass so water beads off at 60km/h.

Clear Glass and Water Repellents: The Rainy Season Prep

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, there's nothing worse than squinting through a smeary mess when a sudden autumn downpour hits. After 15 years on the tools, I've seen blokes spend a fortune on wipers when all they needed was a proper glass decon and a decent repellent. This guide is for anyone sick of bug guts and salt haze ruining their view. It's quick, simple, and makes a massive difference on the highway.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Quality Glass Cleaner — Avoid the ammonia stuff from the supermarket; it'll kill your tint. Use something like Bowden's Own Naked Glass.
Clay Bar or Clay Mitt — Essential for getting those baked-on bug guts and red dust out of the glass pores.
Glass Polish — Autoglym Glass Polish is my go-to for removing that stubborn salt haze from coastal driving.
Ceramic Glass Coating or Sealant — I reckon Gtechniq G5 is great for beginners, or Glaco if you want that crazy water beading.
Waffle Weave Microfibre Towels — At least three. One for cleaning, one for polishing, one for the final buff.
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) Wipe — A 50/50 mix with water to strip any leftover oils before the repellent goes on.
Applicator Pads — Microfibre or foam. Just make sure they're clean.
New Wiper Blades — No point doing all this work if your old, sun-baked wipers are just going to scratch the coating.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Work in the shade — Trying to do this in 40 degree heat is a nightmare. The product will flash too fast and leave streaks.
Check for chips — If you've got a fresh stone chip from the Bruce Highway, get it filled first. Liquid sealant can sometimes make the crack worse.
Cool glass to the touch — If the glass is hot, give it a splash of cool water first and dry it off.
Lift the wipers — Get them out of the way so you don't miss the bottom edge of the screen.

Step-by-Step Treatment

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Clean

Give the glass a heavy spray and wipe. I learned the hard way on a dusty Hilux that if you skip this, you’re just grinding dirt into the glass.

02

Mechanical Decontamination

Use your clay bar with plenty of lube (glass cleaner works fine). You'll feel the grit disappearing. Keep going until the bar glides silent.

03

Polish the Surface

Apply a small amount of glass polish. This removes water spots and road film that normal washing won't touch. Work in circular motions, then buff off.

04

The IPA Wipe

This is the most important bit. Wipe the whole screen with IPA to ensure it's chemically clean. If there's any oil left, your repellent won't bond.

05

Apply Repellent

Work in small sections (half a screen at a time). Use a cross-hatch pattern (up and down, then side to side) to ensure total coverage.

06

The Cure and Buff

Wait the recommended time (usually 5-10 mins). If it gets grabby, a tiny mist of water helps the final buff. Use a fresh, dry microfibre.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check for 'ghosting' — Look at the glass from an angle in the light. If you see smears, buff them out now.
Clean the wiper refills — Wipe your wiper blades with a damp cloth. You'd be surprised how much black gunk builds up on them.
Interior glass check — Usually, the 'smudge' is actually on the inside. Give the interior a quick wipe while you're at it.

A Couple of Hard Truths

A customer once complained their wipers were 'chattering' after a treatment. Truth is, if you apply too much product or don't buff it off properly, the wipers will jump. Less is more, mate. Also, don't bother with those '2-in-1' washer reservoir additives, they usually just clog your spray jets over time.

Watch Out

Never apply these treatments to a motorbike visor unless the bottle specifically says it's plastic-safe. Most of these contain solvents that will craze or crack polycarbonate plastics. Also, keep the IPA away from your rubber seals!
