Brake Dust Removal: The Pro Checklist (Mar 2026)

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Caked-on brake dust is more than just ugly; it's corrosive metal eating your rims. Here is exactly how to strip it off without ruining your finish.

Brake Dust Removal: The Pro Checklist (Mar 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years scrubbing wheels, and nothing ruins a car's look faster than brown, crusty rims. Whether it's red dust from a trip through the Red Centre or just nasty European pad dust, you need a solid plan. This checklist is for the blokes who want their wheels back to showroom standard without spending all Saturday doing it.

01

The Right Gear (Don't Skimp Here)

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Wheel Cleaner — I reckon P&S Brake Buster or Bowden’s Own Wheely Clean are the best for Aussie conditions.
Iron Remover / Decontamination Spray — Essential for that 'bleeding' effect. I use Gtechniq W6 for the heavy stuff.
Soft Boar's Hair Brushes — Keep one for the lug nuts and one for the faces. Don't use your paint brushes!
Wheel Barrel Brush — Something like an EZ Detail brush to get behind the spokes where the real grime hides.
Pressure Washer or High-Flow Hose — Necessary to blast out the red outback dust before you start scrubbing.
Microfibre Wash Mitt — Use an old one. This will be 'the wheel mitt' forever now.
Bucket with Grit Guard — Keep your rinse water clean so you aren't rubbing grit back onto the rim.
Tyre Dressing — Meguiar's Endurance Gel is my go-to for that long-lasting shine.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Are the wheels cool to the touch? — Made this mistake on a black Commodore once, sprayed cleaner on hot rims and it baked on instantly. Nightmare.
Is the car in the shade? — Our March sun is brutal. If you work in direct sun, the chemicals will dry before they can work.
Do you have eye protection? — Trust me, getting iron remover in your eye is a trip to the servo for eyewash you don't want.
Is the wheel finish compatible? — If you've got raw polished aluminium or matte wraps, check your cleaner is pH neutral first.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Initial Blast

Pressure wash the wheels thoroughly. You want to get rid of the loose red dust and coastal salt before you touch the surface with a brush.

02

Apply Iron Remover

Spray your iron remover on dry wheels. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes until it turns purple. Don't let it dry out! (smells like rotten eggs, sorry).

03

Agitate the Barrels

Reach in with your long brush. Scrub the inner barrels first. This is where most of the heat and dust build-up lives.

04

Detail the Faces and Lugs

Use your soft brush for the spokes and lug nut holes. I once found a tiny huntsman living in a lug hole, give 'em a poke first!

05

Scrub the Tyres

Use a stiff brush and a bit of APC or wheel cleaner to get the brown 'blooming' off the rubber. It makes the whole job look better.

06

Final Rinse

Flood the whole area with water. Ensure you've rinsed the brake calipers and rotors thoroughly so no chemicals are trapped.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check the '6 o'clock' position — People always miss the bottom of the rim. Roll the car forward half a metre if you have to.
Look behind the spokes — Use a torch. Any leftover black spots will eventually pit the metal.
Dry the wheels — Use a dedicated microfibre or a leaf blower to prevent water spots from our heavy Aussie tap water.

Expert Advice

If you're sick of doing this every fortnight, ceramic coat your wheels. I did it to the missus' car and now I just pressure wash the dust off. No scrubbing needed. Also, avoid those 'acid' cleaners from the supermarket, they'll eat your clear coat faster than a magpie eats a sausage.

Watch Out

NEVER use dish soap on wheels; it strips any protection and dries out the rubber. Also, keep all wheel chemicals away from your driveway if it’s unsealed stone, as some iron removers can stain pavers permanently.
