Autumn Prep: Protecting Your Paint Before Winter Hits

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

March is the sweet spot for car care in Australia. Here is how to shield your paint from late-season UV rays, salt spray, and that nasty bat poo before the weather turns.

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, we're right in that transition period where the bite of summer is still lingering but the mornings are getting crisp. It's the perfect time to get a solid layer of protection on your car. This guide covers the quick wins to keep your daily or your weekend toy looking mint despite the harsh Aussie elements.

01

Why Bother Right Now?

Most blokes wait until it's freezing to think about car care, but by then, the damage is done. March in Australia is brutal, you've got that lingering 35 degree heat, high UV, and if you're near the coast, the salt spray is constant. I've spent 15 years fixing paint that's been absolutely roasted because someone didn't bother with a simple wax or sealant before the season changed. Trust me, spending an hour now saves you a three-day polish job later.

Decontaminate Before You Protect

Don't just chuck wax over dirty paint. After a summer of outback trips or highway driving, your paint is likely full of iron filings and red dust. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore years ago, I waxed over some fallout and it looked like sandpaper under the sun. Hit it with a clay bar or a chemical iron remover first. Bowden's Own 'Three Way' is my go-to for this. It gets the surface smooth as glass so your protection actually sticks.

The Bat Poo Hazard

Autumn is prime time for bats and birds to go to town on your bonnet. Because the panels are still getting hot in the arvo, that acidic mess bakes in fast. I've seen bat droppings eat through clear coat in less than 24 hours. Keep a bottle of quick detailer and a clean microfibre in the boot. If you see a hit, get it off immediately. Don't wait until the weekend wash or you'll be looking at a permanent etch mark.

Sealant Over Wax for Longevity

I love the glow of a carnauba wax, but honestly, it won't survive an Aussie autumn. It melts at high temps. For March, I reckon you're better off with a synthetic sealant or a ceramic spray like Gtechniq C2. It handles the heat better and stands up to the salt spray if you're living down by the beach. It'll give you 4-6 months of protection, taking you right through the wet months.

Don't Forget the Plastics

UV levels stay high in March, and your black plastic trim is the first thing to fade and go grey. A customer once brought in a brand new Ranger with trim that looked ten years old because of the sun. Give your trim a wipe down with a dedicated UV protectant like Aerospace 303. Don't use that greasy 'tyre shine' rubbish on your dash or exterior trim, it'll just attract dust and turn into a muddy mess.

The Autumn Protection Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
pH Neutral Car Wash — Avoid the cheap stuff at the servo that strips your wax.
Clay Bar or Mitt — To pull out the embedded red dust and grit.
Synthetic Sealant or Ceramic Spray — Your main shield against UV and acid.
Quality Microfibre Towels — At least 3-4 clean ones. Throw the old crusty ones out.
Plastic Trim Protectant — To stop the 'grey fade' from the sun.

Watch Out

Never wash your car in the direct midday sun when the metal is hot enough to fry an egg. I've seen guys do this at the local car wash and the soap dries instantly, leaving spots that are a nightmare to remove. Also, don't use dish soap. It's for greasy pans, not your paint, it'll strip every bit of protection you have left.

Common Questions

Is a ceramic spray as good as a professional coating?
Nah, not even close. A pro coating lasts years, while a spray is a few months. But for 20 bucks and 10 minutes of work, a spray is 100 times better than doing nothing at all.
How do I get red dust out of the crevices?
Use a soft detailing brush and some soapy water around the window seals and badges. If you leave that red dust there, it holds moisture and can start corrosion over winter.
My paint feels rough even after a wash. What's up?
That's industrial fallout or tree sap. You need to hit it with a clay bar. If you don't, your wax won't bond and your paint will never really shine.

Finish Line

Right, so that's the gist of it. Don't overcomplicate things. Just get the paint clean, smooth, and sealed up before the weather gets properly miserable. It makes cleaning the car so much easier when it's raining every second day. Anyway, give it a crack this weekend and your paint will thank you for it.
