The Pre-Sale Detail: Get Top Dollar for Your Ride

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen blokes lose three grand on a sale just because the footwells were sandy and the paint looked dull. After 15 years in the trade, I reckon a solid afternoon's work can literally pay for your next holiday. This checklist is designed to get your car looking 'showroom' without wasting time on stuff buyers won't notice. Focus on the hotspots, get it shiny, and get that 'Sold' sticker on the window.

01

A Quick Tip From the Trade

I once had a customer bring in a dirty LandCruiser that had been through the Simpson Desert twice. He was gonna list it for 45k 'as is'. Spent a day on it, got the red dust out of the door seals, and he ended up getting 52k. Seriously, don't skip the small stuff. Buyers look at door jambs and seat rails to see how well you've treated the car. If those are filthy, they'll think the engine is too.
02

The Gear You Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Two buckets with grit guards — One for soapy water, one for rinsing your mitt. Crucial for avoiding swirls.
Quality pH neutral soap — Bowden's Own Nanolicious is my go-to for a deep clean.
All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) or Degreaser — Essential for the engine bay and door jambs.
Clay bar or clay mitt — If the paint feels like sandpaper, you need this.
Microfibre drying towel — A big thirsty one. Don't use a chamois, they're rubbish.
Interior detailer and stiff brushes — For getting dust out of the air vents and cracks.
Glass cleaner — Non-ammonia if you've got aftermarket tint.
Tyre shine — Meguiar's Endurance Gel lasts the longest, in my opinion.
03

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the weather — Don't wash in 40 degree heat or direct sun, you'll get water spots.
Remove all personal junk — Empty the glovebox and centre console completely.
Inspect for 'bird bombs' — Pre-soak any dried droppings with a wet paper towel for 5 minutes.
Test the pressure washer — Keep it away from old, flaky clear coat or it'll peel like a sunburn.
04

Step-By-Step Detailing

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Engine Bay Degrease

Cover the alternator with a plastic bag. Spray degreaser, agitate with a brush, and rinse gently. It makes the car look mechanically mint.

02

Wheel and Arch Scrub

Clean these first while the car is dry. Use a stiff brush for the tyres and a soft one for the rims.

03

The Two-Bucket Wash

Wash from the roof down. Rinse your mitt after every panel. This is where you get rid of that coastal salt and road grime.

04

Decontamination

Run a clay bar over the wet paint. It pulls out embedded rail dust and sap. Don't drop the clay or it's bin-material immediately.

05

The Drying Phase

Dry it quickly using a microfibre towel. I usually use a cordless leaf blower to get water out of the mirrors and badges.

06

Deep Interior Clean

Vacuum every square inch. Use a brush to get sand out of the carpet. Wipe down all plastics with a matte-finish protectant.

07

Paint Protection

Apply a quick spray sealant or wax. It adds depth to the colour and makes it look like it's been garaged its whole life.

08

Crystal Clear Glass

Clean the inside of the windscreen twice. Buyers hate streaks when they're out on a test drive late in the arvo.

05

Final Inspection (The 'Buyer's Eye' Check)

What You'll Need

0/4
Check door jambs and boot shut — Dry any drips and wipe away leftover polish.
Inspect the 'hidden' spots — Behind the sun visors and inside the cup holders.
Tyre shine check — Make sure it's even. No one likes patchy tyres.
The Sniff Test — Does it smell like a wet dog? Chuck a subtle 'new car' scent tag under the seat.

Watch Out

Never use dish soap! It'll strip the oils out of your rubber seals and leave the paint looking flat. Also, if you’re cleaning the engine bay, keep the high-pressure water away from electrical connectors and air intakes, I learned that the hard way on a black Commodore back in the day. Not a cheap mistake to fix.
06

One Last Thing

Honestly, if the paint is really cooked from the Aussie sun, a quick wash won't hide it. But if you've kept it decent, this checklist will make it pop. Take your photos in the 'Golden Hour', just before sunset at a local park. It makes any car look like a million bucks. Good luck with the sale, mate!
