Summer Boat Trailer Maintenance Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Don't let a seized bearing or rust-welded winch ruin your day at the ramp. This quick checklist covers the essentials to keep your trailer moving in the Aussie heat.

Summer Boat Trailer Maintenance Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many blokes stuck on the side of the Bruce Highway because they ignored their trailer. Between the salt spray and the 40-degree heat, February is brutal on galvanised steel and rubber. This list is my personal go-to for keeping things mobile and rust-free.

01

The Essentials Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
Marine Grade Grease — Don't use the cheap stuff. I swear by Lucas Oil Marine Grease or Penrite. It actually handles the salt.
Lanotec or Inox Spray — My absolute go-to for coating bolts. It smells like a sheep shearing shed but it stops rust dead.
Wire Brush — For knocking back that crusty salt buildup before it eats the metal.
Wheel Bearing Protector Tool — Something like Bearing Buddies. Makes life heaps easier.
Galvanising Cold Spray — A can of 'Gal In A Can' for touching up any scratches in the coating.
Fresh Water Hose & Jet Nozzle — Essential for flushing out the box sections where the salt hides.
Dielectric Grease — For the light plugs. Trust me, it prevents those annoying flickering indicators.
Tyre Pressure Gauge — Check 'em cold before you hit the road.
02

The 'Before You Start' Scan

What You'll Need

0/4
Heat Check — Touch the hubs after a drive. If they're 'fry an egg' hot, your bearings are shot.
Visual Rust Check — Look specifically at the leaf springs. If they look like flaky pastry, they need replacing.
Winch Strap Condition — Check for UV fraying. I once saw a strap snap at the ramp and a Haines Hunter ended up on the concrete. Not pretty.
Tyre Sidewalls — Check for sun-cracking. Aussie UV kills trailer tyres long before the tread wears out.

Maintenance Sequence

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Deep Flush

Blast every inch of the frame with fresh water. Stick the hose inside the box sections to wash out the trapped salt and red dust.

02

Grease the Hubs

Pump fresh marine grease into the nipples until the old, milky grease is pushed out. If it looks like coffee with milk, water has gotten in.

03

Treat the Leaf Springs

Scrape off loose salt and spray them heavily with Lanotec. It creates a sexy lanolin barrier that water just beads off. Your missus might hate the smell though.

04

Winch and Jockey Wheel

Unwind the winch fully, check the strap, and grease the gears. Do the jockey wheel handle too so it doesn't seize in the summer heat.

05

Electrical Contact Clean

Spray some contact cleaner into the 7-pin plug, let it dry, then chuck a bit of dielectric grease in there to keep the moisture out.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Nut Tension — Give the wheel nuts a crack with the lug wrench just to be sure.
Safety Chains — Ensure the D-shackles aren't rusted shut. You should be able to undo them by hand.
Light Test — Indicators, brakes, and clearance lights. Do this in the shade so you can actually see them.

Watch Out

Never crawl under a trailer supported only by a jack, use stands. Also, be careful spraying Lanolin near the brake discs or drums, if you get it on the friction surfaces, you won't be stopping at the next set of lights!
