Steering Wheel Deep Clean Checklist

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Your steering wheel is the filthiest part of your car, soaking up sweat, sun cream, and Aussie dust. Here is exactly how to get that factory matte finish back without ruining the leather.

Steering Wheel Deep Clean Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, I have seen some absolute shockers in my time, including a LandCruiser wheel so caked in red dust and hand grease it felt like a glazed donut. Most people just wipe it with a wet rag, but that just pushes the salt and oils deeper into the grain. This guide is for anyone who wants to stop their wheel from peeling under our brutal UV and actually make it feel nice to touch again.

01

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Leather/Interior Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own Leather Love is a cracker for most Aussie cars.
Soft horsehair detailing brush — Don't use a stiff nylon brush unless you want to scratch the finish off.
3-4 Microfibre towels — Use clean ones. I once used a 'clean' rag that had old wax on it, absolute nightmare.
Interior Scrub Pad — Something like an Autoglym Interior Scrub Pad for the really stubborn grime.
A small bowl of warm water — Just for rinsing your brush out between passes.
Leather Conditioner or Shield — Essential in our heat to stop the leather from cracking.
A soft toothbrush — Perfect for getting into the stitching and around the buttons.
Painter's tape — Optional, but handy to cover buttons if you're a bit messy with the spray.
02

Pre-Start Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for peeling — If the 'leather' is already flaking off, stop. You'll only make it worse with scrubbing.
Identify the material — Is it real leather, Alcantara, or just plastic? Don't use leather cleaner on suede.
Park in the shade — Never do this in the 40-degree sun; the cleaner will dry instantly and leave streaks.
Roll the windows down — Give yourself some air and room to move the wheel around.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Dust

Give the wheel a quick wipe with a dry microfibre to get the loose Aussie dust off before you start wetting things down.

02

Apply Cleaner to the Brush

Don't spray the wheel directly. Spray the cleaner onto your brush or scrub pad first to avoid splashing your dash and gauges.

03

Agitate Gently

Work in small sections (top, sides, bottom). Use circular motions. You'll see the foam turn brown, that's the sweat and salt coming out.

04

The Wipe Down

Use a fresh microfibre to wipe away the dirty foam immediately. Don't let it dry on the leather or you'll have to start over.

05

Clean the Stitching

Use the toothbrush with a tiny bit of cleaner for the seams. This is where the red dust loves to hide on those outback trips.

06

Condition and Protect

Once dry, apply a tiny amount of leather conditioner. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then buff it off so it's not greasy.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
The 'Matte' Test — If it's shiny, it's still dirty or you've put too much product on. It should look dull and clean.
Check the back of the wheel — Everyone forgets the back of the grips. Give them a feel; they should be smooth, not sticky.
Button check — Make sure no cleaner is stuck in the volume or cruise control buttons.
Slippage check — Make 100% sure it's not slippery before you drive. Safety first, mate.

Watch Out

Avoid 'Magic Erasers' at all costs. I've seen guys use them thinking they're a miracle fix, but they're basically sandpaper. They'll strip the protective top coat right off your leather, and it'll start peeling within a month. Also, steer clear of cheap silicone-based 'shines' from the servo, they make the wheel slippery and dangerous in a slide.

Pro Tip

If you've been at the beach, wipe your wheel down with a damp (not soaking) microfibre as soon as you get home. Salt air and sweaty hands are the fastest way to kill a leather steering wheel in the Australian Autumn.
