Stain-Free Interior: The Pro's Checklist

Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

Don't let a spilled coffee or red outback dust ruin your pride and joy. This checklist covers exactly what you need to lift stubborn stains without trashing your carpet fibres.

Stain-Free Interior: The Pro's Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen it all, from melted Maccas shakes to that nasty red dust that seems to bake into the floorboards after a trip up north. This guide is for the weekend warrior who wants a clean cab without spending hundreds at a pro shop. We're keeping it simple and practical so you can get it done in the garage this arvo.

01

A Quick Word from the Trade

I once had a bloke bring in a 79 Series that looked like he'd let a literal red kangaroo explode in the footwell, turns out it was just spilled beetroot juice from a burger and six months of red dust. I learned the hard way that if you go too heavy with the water, you'll just end up with a mouldy smell that lingers for weeks. Stick to the checklist and don't soak the poor thing.
02

The Essential Gear Bag

What You'll Need

0/8
High-quality vacuum — Needs a crevice tool. If it's gutless, don't bother.
Stiff-bristled nylon brush — Avoid metal bristles, they'll shred the carpet pile.
Interior Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own Fabra Cadabra is the best for Aussie stains.
Microfibre towels — Get a pack of cheap ones from the servo; they'll get filthy.
Spray bottle with clean water — For rinsing (lightly!).
Drill brush attachment — Optional, but a lifesaver for that stubborn red dirt.
Steam cleaner — If you've got one, use it. If not, don't stress.
Absorbent paper towels — For the initial 'blot' phase.
03

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for moisture — Is the carpet already damp? Find the leak first.
Colour fastness test — Test your cleaner on a hidden spot under the seat.
Sunlight check — Don't do this in 40 degree direct sun, the cleaner will dry too fast.
Empty the bins — Chuck the loose rubbish so you aren't just moving dirt around.

The Clean-Up Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Dry Vac

Spend 10 minutes here. If you don't get the loose sand and dust out first, you're just making mud once you add the liquid.

02

Identify and Blot

If the stain is fresh, blot it with paper towels. Never rub! Rubbing pushes the gunk deeper into the backing of the carpet, absolute rookie move.

03

Apply Cleaner

Mist your cleaner over the area. Don't drown it. I usually let it dwell for about 30-60 seconds to let the chemistry do the heavy lifting.

04

Agitation

Use your nylon brush in circular motions. You'll see the foam turning brown or red. That's the dirt lifting out of the fibres.

05

Extraction / Blotting

Use a clean microfibre to soak up the dirty suds. Press down hard. Repeat the spray and blot process until the towel comes back clean.

06

The Final Dry

Leave the windows down or put a pedestal fan in the car. If it stays damp in our humidity, it'll smell like a wet dog tomorrow.

05

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
The 'Sniff' Test — No funky smells? Good job.
Crunch Check — Wait for it to dry, then feel it. If it's crunchy, you didn't rinse enough soap out.
Uniform Colour — Check under different light to make sure you didn't leave a 'clean spot' ring.

Watch Out

Avoid using bleach or harsh laundry detergents. I saw a mate try to clean his Ranger with domestic floor cleaner once, it stripped the dye right out of the carpet and left a white circle. Also, be careful around electronic seat motors; don't go spraying water everywhere like you're washing the driveway.
06

Final Thought

Honestly, if you've been out in the red dirt, you'll probably have to do this twice. That dust is finer than talcum powder and loves to hide. Just take your time, keep your towels fresh, and she'll be right.
