Restoring Your Grimy Steering Wheel

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Get rid of that nasty 'human slime' and sun-baked red dust. A quick checklist to bring back that factory-fresh feel without ruining your leather.

Restoring Your Grimy Steering Wheel

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, your steering wheel is the one part of the car you're always touching, so it gets absolutely revolting if you leave it. Between the leftover sunscreen from a summer at the beach and that fine red dust that gets into everything, it's a breeding ground for bacteria. This list is for anyone who wants to stop their wheel feeling like a greasy sausage roll. I've cleaned thousands of these, and most people are shocked at how much better the whole car feels after a ten-minute scrub.

What You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Leather/Interior Cleaner — P&S Xpress Interior or Bowden's Own Leather Love are my go-tos. Don't use dish soap!
Soft Boar's Hair Brush — Essential for getting into the grain. A soft toothbrush works in a pinch.
Microfibre Towels (at least 2) — One for wiping the grime away, one for a final dry buff.
Magic Eraser (EXTREME CAUTION) — Only for ruinously shiny/greasy wheels. I rarely use them because they're abrasive.
Leather Conditioner or Protectant — To stop the Aussie sun from cracking the hide once it's clean.
Steam Cleaner (Optional) — I learned the hard way that steam is the fastest way to kill bacteria, but don't overdo it.
Small Detail Brush — For the buttons and the stitching where the dust loves to hide.
Nitrile Gloves — Trust me, you don't want the 'black gunk' on your hands. It's properly gross.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check for peeling — If the leather is already flaking, aggressive cleaning will make it worse. Go easy.
Identify the material — Is it real leather, Alcantara, or just plastic? Different materials need different chemicals.
Park in the shade — Never clean a hot steering wheel. The cleaner will just flash off and leave streaks.
Check the stitching — Look for loose threads that might snag on your brush or towel.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Dust

Give the wheel and the column a quick wipe with a dry microfibre. You want to remove those loose red dust particles before adding liquid.

02

Apply Cleaner to Brush

Don't spray the wheel directly! You'll get overspray on the gauge cluster. Spray your brush or towel instead. I've seen too many ruined screens from this.

03

Agitate Gently

Work in small sections. Use circular motions with your brush. You'll see the foam turn brown or grey, that's the 'human butter' coming off.

04

Wipe the Gunk

Immediately wipe the area with a clean, damp microfibre. Don't let the dirty suds dry back onto the leather or you're back to square one.

05

Clean Buttons and Joins

Use a dry detail brush or a toothpick to get the gunk out of the seams and around the volume buttons. Be careful with moisture here.

06

Condition and Protect

Apply a tiny bit of leather conditioner. Let it sit for a minute, then buff it off completely. It shouldn't feel greasy when you're done.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
The 'Matte' Test — Clean leather should be matte. If it's still shiny, it's still dirty. Give it another go.
The Grip Test — Make sure it's not slippery. A slippery wheel is a death trap on the highway.
Button Function — Click every button to ensure no cleaner has made them sticky or unresponsive.
Back of the Wheel — Most blokes forget the back of the spokes. Run your hand around, it should feel smooth.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'shining' products like Armor All wipes on the wheel. I once had a customer who did this and nearly put his LandCruiser through a fence because his hands slipped. Also, if you're cleaning Alcantara, NEVER use a leather conditioner, you'll mat the fibres and ruin it forever.
