Pro Detail Checklist for the Home Garage

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Stop wasting your weekends with a bucket of soapy water and an old sponge. This is the exact workflow I use in my shop to get a professional finish without the professional price tag.

Pro Detail Checklist for the Home Garage

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, if you're serious about keeping your pride and joy looking mint, you need a system. I've spent 15 years polishing everything from dusty farm utes to high-end Euros, and the biggest mistake I see is blokes rushing the prep. Especially now it's Autumn, you've gotta deal with that baked-on summer grime before you even think about waxing. This checklist is your play-book for a proper results-driven detail.

01

The Gear You Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Two 15L buckets with grit guards — Don't skip the guards. I once saw a mate ruin his black Commodore's bonnet because a tiny pebble got stuck in his mitt.
Quality Microfibre Wash Mitt — Chuck the sponges in the bin. They're paint killers.
pH Neutral Car Wash — Bowden's Own Nanolicious is my go-to for Aussie conditions.
Iron Decontaminator — Essential if you live near a train line or heavy industry.
Clay Bar or Clay Mitt — The 'fine' grade is usually enough for most cars.
Synthetic Sealant or Ceramic Spray — Meguiar's Hybrid Ceramic is dead easy to use.
Dedicated Wheel Cleaner — Something that reacts with iron (turns purple) is best.
Large Microfibre Drying Towel — Must be clean. If you drop it on the garage floor, it's done. Use a fresh one.
02

Pre-Start Environment Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Surface Temperature — Feel the panels. If they're too hot to touch, you'll get water spots. Wait for them to cool down.
Shade Access — Never detail in direct Aussie sun if you can help it. Under a carport or in the garage is best.
Water Quality — If you're on tank water or have 'hard' water, you'll need to dry the car twice as fast.
Bird/Bat Dropping Check — Soak these with a wet cloth for 5 mins before touching. Don't scrub dry bat poop, it's like sandpaper.

The Pro Workflow

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Wheels First

Clean wheels while they're cool. Doing them last is a mistake because you'll splash brake dust back onto your clean paint.

02

The Pre-Wash

Rinse the car thoroughly. If you have a foam cannon, use it now to lift the red dust and grit before you touch the paint.

03

Two-Bucket Wash

One bucket with soap, one with plain water to rinse your mitt. Work from the top down. Be gentle, don't scrub like you're cleaning a BBQ.

04

Chemical Decon

Spray your iron remover on wet paint. Let it sit for 2-3 mins (don't let it dry!) then rinse. It'll pull out those hidden metallic bits.

05

Mechanical Decon (Clay)

Use plenty of lubricant. Slide the clay over the paint until it feels smooth as glass. This is where the real shine starts.

06

The Dry

Use a large drying towel. I like to 'sheet' the water off first with a low-pressure hose, then pat dry the rest.

07

Seal and Protect

Apply your sealant. This protects against that brutal UV and makes the next wash ten times easier. Follow the bottle's instructions exactly.

04

The 'Is It Done?' Checklist

What You'll Need

0/3
Door Jambs — Open every door and wipe the sills. Trust me, the missus will notice this more than the shiny bonnet.
Glass Streak Check — Check the windscreen from inside the car. Use a fresh microfibre for glass only.
Tyre Shine — Don't go overboard. Too much 'sling' will just end up on your fresh paintwork five minutes down the road.

Watch Out

Look, truth be told, most damage happens during the wash. Never use dish soap, it strips the oils out of your plastics and kills any wax. And for god's sake, if you drop your clay bar on the driveway, chuck it out. It's a magnet for grit and you'll score your paint in seconds. I learned that the expensive way on a customer's Range Rover once. Not fun.

One Last Tip

Detouring through the outback? If you've got red dust everywhere, spend 15 minutes just rinsing the undercarriage and wheel arches before you even start the top. That stuff gets everywhere and will ruin your wash mitt in seconds.
