Post-Adventure Mud and Red Dust Removal

Dirty car vents aren't just gross—they're blowing dust, allergens, and stale air right at your face. Every. Single. Drive.

When you've just come back from a weekend in the bush or a trip up the coast, that mud isn't just dirt, it's a ticking clock for your paint and chassis. Here is how to get it off properly without scratching your clear coat to pieces.

Post-Adventure Mud and Red Dust Removal

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, we've all been there. You get back from a camping trip and honestly, you just want to crack a cold one and leave the car for tomorrow. But trust me, that red dust and mud becomes like concrete once it bakes in our March sun. I learned this the hard way with a black Commodore I used to own, left the mud on for three days and it actually stained the clear coat. This checklist is your no-nonsense guide to getting it clean before the damage is done.

01

The Right Gear for the Job

What You'll Need

0/8
Pressure washer — Don't go too crazy on the PSI near sensors, but you need some poke for the wheel arches.
Snow foam cannon & high-alkaline soap — I reckon Bowden’s Own Mega Wash or Snow Job is the go-to for Aussie grime.
Underbody water broom or angled wand — Saves your back and actually gets the salt and grit out of the chassis rails.
Two 15L buckets with grit guards — Essential. If you don't use grit guards, you're just rubbing dirt back onto the car.
Soft-bristled detailing brushes — For getting the dust out of the window seals and door handles.
Dedicated wheel and tyre cleaner — Something like P&S Brake Buster works a treat on muddy sidewalls.
Large microfibre drying towel — Don't use a chamois. They're old school and just drag remaining grit across the paint.
Degreaser or APC — For the lower sills where the greasy mud sticks.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Engine is cool to the touch — Spraying cold water on a hot block or rotors is a recipe for disaster (and cracks).
Windows and sunroof fully closed — The missus will never let you hear the end of it if you soak the interior.
Parked in the shade — In 30-40 degree heat, the soap will dry in seconds and leave nasty water spots.
Inspection for cake-on mud — Check inside the wheel rims, if mud is stuck there, your car will wobble like a shopping trolley on the highway.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Heavy Knock-down

Use the pressure washer to blast the heavy chunks off. Start from the bottom and work up, then flush the chassis rails until the water runs clear.

02

Snow Foam Soak

Cover the whole car in foam. Let it dwell for 5 minutes but don't let it dry. This helps lift that stubborn red dust without you touching the paint.

03

Wheel and Arch Scrub

While the foam is dwelling, hit the tyres and arches with your brushes. A customer once brought in a Ranger with 'permanent' brown tyres, they just needed a proper scrub.

04

The Contact Wash

Use the two-bucket method. Use a high-quality mitt and light pressure. If the mitt gets dirty, rinse it in the 'rinse' bucket before taking more soap.

05

Final Rinse and Flush

Rinse from the roof down. Pay extra attention to the wiper cowl and window seals where that fine red dust loves to hide and grit up.

06

Dry and Protect

Dry it off quickly to avoid water spotting. I'd chuck a quick spray sealant on afterwards to make the mud easier to wash off next time.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check behind the fuel filler flap — Always a hidden nest for red dust and mud.
Inspect door jambs and sills — Wipe these down or they'll grind away at your paint every time the door shuts.
Check wheel balance — Run it up to 60km/h on a safe road to ensure all mud is out of the inner rims.
Glass check — Look for streaks. Use a dedicated glass cleaner so you aren't blinded by the morning sun.

Watch Out

Never, and I mean never, try to wipe off dry red dust with a cloth. It's basically liquid sandpaper. Also, be careful with high pressure near your radiator fins, you'll flatten them out and your car will overheat next time you're towing.

Detailer's Secret

If you've been in salt water or heavy mud, I honestly wouldn't bother with the cheap 'drive-through' underbody washes at the servo. They usually just recycle salty water. Give it a crack yourself with a proper underbody attachment at home.
