Making Your Exhaust Tips Shine Again (Mar 2026)

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Dull, blackened exhaust tips ruin a good detail. Here is the gear and the process I use to get them back to a mirror finish without scratching the metal.

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, nothing looks worse than a clean car with filthy, carbon-caked exhaust tips. Whether you've got a dual-cab ute or a weekend cruiser, the Aussie sun and road grime bake that soot on hard. I've spent 15 years polishing chrome and stainless, so I've put together this quick checklist to get you sorted in the garage this weekend.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Wheel cleaner or APC — Something like Bowden's Own Wheely Clean works a treat on carbon.
Metal Polish — Autoglym Metal Polish or Purple Metal Polish are my go-to's.
0000 Grade Steel Wool — Must be 'four-zero' grade. Anything coarser will scratch the bejesus out of it.
Microfibre Cloths — Use old ones you're happy to chuck away afterwards.
Small Detailing Brush — For getting into the gaps where the tip meets the bumper.
Nitrile Gloves — Carbon soot is a nightmare to get out from under your fingernails.
Wheel Bucket — Don't use your paintwork bucket for this filthy job.
Protection (Sealant) — A bit of Gtechniq C5 or a high-heat wax helps stop soot sticking next time.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the exhaust cold? — I learned this the hard way on a hot V8, melted my glove right onto the chrome.
Check the finish — Is it real metal? If it's just silver plastic (looking at you, modern SUVs), do not use metal polish.
Check for loose soot — Give it a quick poke; if chunks are falling off, it needs a heavy degrease first.
Position the car — Try to work in the shade. Applying polish to sun-baked metal is a recipe for a bad arvo.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Clean

Spray your wheel cleaner or APC inside and outside the tip. Let it dwell for a minute, then scrub with your brush and rinse. Don't be stingy here.

02

The Steel Wool Trick

If there's crusty black soot that won't budge, lubed-up 0000 steel wool is magic. Honestly, I wouldn't bother with anything else for heavy buildup. Scrub gently.

03

Dry Thoroughly

Dry the metal completely with an old rag. You don't want water mixing with your polish and making a muddy mess.

04

Apply Metal Polish

Chuck a 50c piece size of polish on a cloth and work it in. You'll see it turn black, that's the chemical reaction cleaning the metal.

05

Buff to a Shine

Use a clean section of your microfibre to buff the residue off. If it's still a bit dull, give it another crack. Usually takes two goes.

06

Seal it Up

Apply your sealant or high-temp wax. This makes the next wash heaps easier, especially if you're driving through red dust or salt spray.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Inner Rim check — Run a finger (in a glove!) around the inner edge. Should be smooth, not crusty.
Bumper check — Make sure you didn't get metal polish on the plastic trim. It leaves nasty white marks.
Reflection test — You should be able to see your mug in it. If not, back to step 4.

A Quick Pro Tip

A customer once brought in a dirty old Falcon with 'ruined' tips. Everyone said they needed replacing, but 10 minutes with 0000 steel wool and some Autosol brought them back like new. Most people give up too early, keep at it!

Watch Out

Never use coarse steel wool or sandpaper, you'll ruin the finish forever. Also, if you've got matte black or powder-coated tips, stay away from metal polish entirely, you'll just end up with weird shiny spots.
