Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Door cards copping a beating from red dust, sunscreen marks, or salt spray? Here is the gear you need and the exact steps to get them looking like they just rolled off the showroom floor.

Keeping Your Door Panels Mint (Mar 2026)

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, door panels are the most abused part of any interior. Between kicking them with your boots and leaning your sweaty arm on the sill after a surf, they get trashed. I've spent 15 years cleaning everything from dusty farm utes to high-end cruisers, and truth be told, most people overcomplicate this. This checklist keeps it simple so you can get it done on a Saturday arvo without the drama.

01

The Gear You'll Actually Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Interior Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own Agent Orange is a ripper for tough grime, or Meguiar's Quik Interior Detailer for light stuff.
Soft Boar's Hair Brushes — Essential for getting into the speaker grilles and window switches.
Microfibre Cloths — Have at least 3, one for cleaning, one for drying, one for the protectant.
Magic Eraser (Use with caution!) — Only for scuff marks on hard plastics. Never use these on leather or soft-touch surfaces (learned that the hard way).
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — Get the red dust out of the door pockets first or you'll just be making mud.
UV Protectant — Something like 303 Aerospace. Our sun is brutal, and unproctected plastic will crack before you know it.
Cotton Buds — For the tiny crevices where the 'missus' spills her coffee.
Interior Scrub Pad — The 'autofiber' style ones are great for textured plastics.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the car in the shade? — Never do this in 40-degree heat. The cleaner will flash dry and leave nasty streaks.
Identify the materials — Check if it's real leather, vinyl, or just textured plastic. It matters for which juice you use.
Window check — Wind them up fully. Getting APC (All Purpose Cleaner) on the inside of freshly tinted glass is a headache you don't want.
Empty the pockets — I once found a three-month-old maccas chip and a live huntsman in a customer's door pocket. Check first!

The Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Dry Vac

Vacuum everything. Get right into the pockets and the bottom of the door. If you've been out back, use the brush to agitate that red dust loose.

02

Sectional Spray

Spray your cleaner onto your brush or cloth, not directly onto the door. This stops 'spotting' and prevents overspray from landing on your seats or glass.

03

Agitate Grime

Work your brush in circular motions. Focus on the armrest and the door handle, that's where the skin oils and sunscreen build up the most.

04

Wipe Down

Use a damp microfibre to wipe away the lifted dirt. Don't let the cleaner sit too long or it'll leave a residue that's a pain to remove.

05

Detail the Switches

Use a slightly damp cotton bud for the window switches. Don't flood them with liquid or you might short out the electronics (happened to a mate's Patrol).

06

UV Protection

Apply your protectant to a clean cloth and wipe it on evenly. This acts like sunscreen for your car. Give it a final buff with a dry cloth.

04

Final Inspection Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the speaker grilles — Make sure no white wax or cleaner residue is stuck in the tiny holes.
The 'Hidden' Edge — Open the door and wipe the very bottom edge and the jambs. It’s where the salt and road grime hide.
Feel test — The armrest shouldn't feel greasy or sticky. If it does, give it another wipe with a dry towel.
Streak check — Look at the panel from a low angle against the light to make sure the dressing is even.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'shiny' silicone-based dressings from the servo; they turn your car into a dust magnet and look cheap. Also, go easy on the magic erasers, they are basically sandpaper. I once saw a bloke sand the grain right off his black Commodore door panel trying to get a scuff out. Never again.
