Your paint is under constant attack: UV rays, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime. Protection isn't optional—it's essential.

Don't let the Aussie sun turn your dashboard into a dried-out biscuit. This checklist covers the gear and steps you need to clean, protect, and block those brutal UV rays.

Keeping Your Dash and Vinyl From Cracking This Autumn

Aussie Conditions

Our intense UV breaks down waxes faster than overseas. Ceramic coatings last longer, but even they need topped up more frequently here.
Quick Summary

Look, if you've ever seen an old LandCruiser with a dash mat covering a canyon-sized crack, you know what we're trying to avoid here. Autumn in Australia is a killer because the sun is still high but we get lazy with the shade. This guide is for anyone who wants to keep their interior looking factory fresh without that greasy, cheap-looking shine. I've done enough interior rescues on sun-damaged daily drivers to know that five minutes of prevention is worth a grand in repairs.

01

The Essential Gear Bag

What You'll Need

0/8
Interior Detailer or Dedicated Vinyl Cleaner — I reckon Bowden's Own 'Inner Beauty' is a cracker for a matte finish.
Soft Horsehair или Synthetic Detailing Brush — To get the red dust out of the grain and stitching.
4-5 Clean Microfibre Towels — Low pile is better for interior work so you don't leave lint everywhere.
UV Protectant (Aerospace 303 is my go-to) — If it doesn't have UV blockers, it's just a fancy scent, don't bother.
Soft-bristled Toothbrush — Perfect for the tight spots around the air vents and head unit.
Vacuum with Brush Attachment — Essential for sucking up the loose grit before you start wiping.
Distilled Water in a Spray Bottle — Good for a final wipe to ensure no chemical residue is left behind.
High-quality Glass Cleaner — Because you'll inevitably get overspray on the windscreen.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — Never work on a hot dash. I learned this the hard way on a black Commodore, the cleaner dried instantly and left permanent streaks.
Check for 'Soft-Touch' plastics — If it feels sticky or rubbery, be gentle. Some older Euros have coatings that peel if you're too aggressive.
Test an inconspicuous area — Always do a test patch on the underside of a door bin or glovebox.
Ditch the rings and watch — The missus isn't happy when I scratch her dash with my wedding ring, and you won't be either.

The Step-by-Step Clean

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Vacuum the Loose Grime

Use the brush attachment to suck up red dust and sand from the base of the windscreen and door pockets. Don't skip this or you'll just grind grit into the vinyl.

02

Dry Brush the Grain

Before adding liquid, use your detailing brush to agitate the textured vinyl. It's the best way to lift stubborn Aussie outback dust out of the pores.

03

Apply Cleaner to the Cloth

Don't spray directly onto the dash. Spraying the towel prevents 'overspray' from landing on the instrument cluster or the inside of your windscreen (which is a pain to clean).

04

Agitate and Wipe

Work in small sections using circular motions. For vents and buttons, use the toothbrush damp with cleaner to get into the crevices where skin oils build up.

05

Apply UV Protection

Apply your protectant (like 303) sparingly. Let it sit for a minute, then buff it off with a dry microfibre. You want a factory matte look, not a greasy 'servo special' shine.

04

The 'Mate-Approved' Inspection

What You'll Need

0/4
No greasy residue — Run your finger over it. If it leaves a print, you need to buff it more.
Check the instrument cluster — Make sure no cleaner spotted the clear plastic. Those spots can be permanent on some cars.
Air vents are aligned — A small detail, but it shows you've done a proper job.
Windscreen is clear — Clean the glass last to remove any stray vapours or fingerprints.

A Few Words of Wisdom

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with those cheap 'armour' wipes from the supermarket. They usually contain silicones that actually accelerate sun damage over time by magnifying the heat. Stick to water-based protectants. Also, if you're living coastal, that salt air gets everywhere, do this clean every month, not just once a year.

Watch Out

Keep cleaners away from your steering wheel, pedals, and gear shifter. Getting these surfaces slippery is a genuine safety hazard when you're trying to merge onto the M1 in the rain.
