Keeping Your Caravan Clean After an Aussie Summer

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Red dust, salt spray, and bat droppings can ruin your van's interior and exterior if left to sit. Here is how to get it sorted before the winter storage kicks in.

Keeping Your Caravan Clean After an Aussie Summer

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, if you've been touring over the Christmas break, your van is probably looking a bit worse for wear. Whether it's red dirt from the Red Centre or salt from a coastal run, these things eat away at your investment. This is for the weekend warriors and grey nomads who want to keep their rig in top nick without spending three days scrubbing.

01

The Red Dust Secret

Right, so if you've just come back from the outback, don't even think about touching the interior with a wet rag first. I learned this the hard way on a customer's brand new Jayco, if you wet that red dust before vacuuming, you're basically just making mud and staining the fabric forever. Use a soft brush attachment on a powerful vac and get every grain out of the tracks and cushions first. Only then do you go in with the cleaners.

Ditch the Harsh Chemicals

Don't bother with heavy degreasers on your caravan's interior plastics or vinyl. I reckon a good All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) like Bowden's Own Agent Orange, diluted down, is all you need. Most van interiors are just thin veneers and plastics; harsh stuff will peel the glue or fade the 'wood' finish faster than you can say 'no dramas'.

The Canvas Care Rule

If you've got a camper trailer with canvas, never, ever use detergent on it. It kills the waterproofing. A mate of mine once scrubbed his fancy camper with dish soap to get bird poo off, next time it rained, he had a swimming pool inside. Just use plain cold water and a soft brush. For the really stubborn bird or bat bombs, let them dry, flick them off, and then use a damp cloth.

Seal Those Seals

After a hot Aussie summer, your rubber window and door seals are probably feeling a bit crusty. I always chuck some 303 Aerospace Protectant or Meguiar's Natural Shine on them. It keeps them supple so they don't crack and let the dust in on your next trip. (Your partner will thank you when the bed isn't covered in grit next time you're near Alice Springs).

Solar Panel Maintenance

People forget the roof. If your solar panels are covered in a thin layer of salt or dust, your charging efficiency drops through the floor. Give them a wipe with a microfibre and some glass cleaner (like Gtechniq G6) so you're actually getting some juice from that autumn sun.

The 'Van-Saving' Kit

What You'll Need

0/5
Karcher or shop vac — Must have a brush attachment for dust.
Microfibre cloths — Get a 20-pack from the servo or Bunnings, you'll need 'em.
Bowden's Own Agent Orange — Best Aussie-made APC for interiors.
303 Aerospace Protectant — The only thing I trust for UV protection on seals.
Long-reach soft brush — For getting the roof grime off without a ladder.

Watch Out

Stop using high-pressure washers near your window seals and vents! I've seen so many people blast water straight through the fridge vents or under the window seals, soaking the internal insulation. That's a one-way ticket to Mould Town. Also, never use a kitchen scourer on your acrylic windows; they'll scratch if you even look at them funny.

Quick Questions

How do I get the 'caravan smell' out after storage?
Air it out first, obviously. But I swear by those moisture absorber tubs from the supermarket. Put a couple in when you park it up. If it's already funky, an ozone generator works, but usually, a deep clean of the upholstery is the only real fix.
Can I use car wax on my caravan?
Most caravans are gelcoat or aluminium, not car paint. A standard car wax is okay, but it won't last. Use a marine-grade sealant or something like Gtechniq C2V3. It handles the UV better and makes the bugs slide off easier next time.
How do I clean the awning without it going mouldy?
Wash it with a very mild soap, rinse it like crazy, and here is the kicker: let it dry 100% before you roll it up. If you roll it damp, it'll be black with mould in a fortnight. Trust me, I've spent hours scrubbing mould off awnings and it's a dog of a job.
