Keeping the Summer Heat and Dust Off Your Rig

Red dust, creek crossings, and corrugated roads don't just test your 4WD—they test your cleaning game. Most people get it wrong.

Summer in Oz is absolute hell on your paint. Between the 40-degree heat, coastal salt, and that inland red dust, your car is copping a beating every single day.

Keeping the Summer Heat and Dust Off Your Rig

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen too many good 4x4s ruined by owners who reckon a quick rinse at the servo once a month is enough. If you're heading out this February, you need a routine that actually stands up to our climate. I've been doing this 15 years and I'm telling you, the sun here doesn't play fair. This is about protecting your investment before the clear coat starts peeling like a bad sunburn.

Don't skip the protection

Honestly, don't even bother washing the car if you aren't going to put some protection back on it. The UV levels in Feb are mental. I made this mistake myself on a black Commodore years ago, left it unprotected for one summer and the bonnet looked like chalk by March. After you wash, chuck on a quick sealant. I'm a big fan of Bowden's Own Bead Machine or Gtechniq C2. It takes five minutes to spray and wipe, and it stops the sun from literally cooking your paint.

The 'Two-Bucket' rule is non-negotiable

If you've been out in the red dust, for the love of god, do not just start scrubbing with a sponge. That dust is basically liquid sandpaper. A mate of mine once took his dusty Patrol through a brush wash at the servo and the swirl marks were so deep I had to spend two days with a heavy compound to fix them. Use a pressure washer first to get the bulk off, then use two buckets, one with your soapy suds and one with clean water to rinse your mitt. It keeps the grit off the paint.

Kill the 'biologicals' immediately

Bird and bat droppings in 40-degree heat will etch into your clear coat in under an hour. No joke. If you see a hit, get it off right away. I keep a bottle of detailing spray and a clean microfibre in the glovebox for this exact reason. Don't wait until the weekend or it'll leave a permanent scar that even a pro polisher might struggle to get out.

Clean your glass properly

Driving into a summer sunset with a greasy windscreen is bloody dangerous. Use a dedicated glass cleaner, I reckon Meguiar's Perfect Clarity is the go, and two cloths. One to wipe the grime, one to buff it dry. I've found that skipping the buffing step is why most people get streaks. Your partner will definitely thank you when they can actually see the road on the way to the beach.

What You'll Need

0/4
Thorough underbody rinse — Especially if you've been near the coast or in salt spray.
Check tyre pressures — Heat causes fluctuations; check 'em while they're cold.
Clean the door jambs — Red dust loves to hide here and grind away at your hinges.
Apply trim protectant — Stop your black plastics from turning that nasty grey colour.

Watch Out

NEVER wash your car in direct sunlight or when the panels are hot to the touch. The chemicals will dry instantly and leave spots that are a nightmare to remove. I've seen guys ruin a set of expensive alloy wheels by spraying cleaner on them while they were still hot from a highway run. Wait for the shade or do it early morning with a cold brew in hand.

Common Summer Queries

Is a ceramic coating worth it for the outback?
100%. It won't stop a rock chip, but it makes washing that sticky red dust off ten times easier. It's the best money you'll spend if you actually use your 4x4.
How do I get sand out of the carpets?
Use a stiff brush to agitate the pile while you vacuum. Or better yet, get some heavy-duty rubber mats and just hose them off. Life's too short to spend three hours vacuuming sand.
Can I use dish soap if I've run out of car wash?
Please don't. Dish soap is designed to strip grease, which means it'll strip every bit of wax and protection off your paint. Use a proper PH-neutral car wash, even a cheap one is better than Fairy liquid.
