The Problem with the 'Fuzz'

Right, so here is the thing about Alcantara. It is not actually suede, it is a synthetic blend of polyester and polyurethane. That is good news because it is tougher, but the bad news is that it acts like a giant sponge for the oils on your skin and that lovely red outback dust. If you leave it, those oils flatten the fibres (the 'pile') and it gets that nasty, greasy shine. I once had a customer bring in a GTS with a wheel so matted I thought it was leather. The biggest mistake I see? Blokes soaking the fabric with cleaner. If you get Alcantara too wet, you can ruin the adhesive underneath or cause water staining. Always spray your cleaner onto a soft brush or microfibre cloth first, never directly onto the seat or wheel. I reckon Bowden's Own 'Fabra Cadabra' is a cracking Aussie product for this, it's gentle but gets the job done.

The Power of the Dry Brush

Before you even touch a liquid cleaner, give it a go with a dry, soft-bristled brush. This 'wakes up' the fibres and flicks out the loose dust and grit. If you've just come back from a dusty trip out west, this is non-negotiable. If you jump straight in with a wet cloth, you're basically just making mud and rubbing it deeper into the fabric. Not a great look, trust me.

Tackle the 'Grip Grease' on Wheels

Steering wheels get the worst of it because of sweaty palms in our 40 degree summers. If your wheel is starting to feel slick or look shiny, it’s loaded with skin oils. Use a dedicated Alcantara cleaner (I'm a fan of Sonax Upholstery & Alcantara Cleaner too) and gently work it in with a soft brush in circular motions. Then, and this is the secret, use a clean, damp microfibre to 'draw' the dirt out by patting it, don't just scrub it back and forth.

Dealing with Aussie Dust

If you've got red dust in your Alcantara, vacuuming is your best mate. Use a soft brush attachment and be thorough. I learned the hard way on my own daily that if you leave that dust in there and then it gets humid or you sweat on it, the dust sets like concrete. Get it out while it's dry!

Watch Out

Never use a steam cleaner on Alcantara unless you really know what you're doing, the heat can melt the synthetic fibres. Also, skip the 'home remedies' like dish soap or baby wipes. They leave residues behind that actually attract more dirt, making your job twice as hard next time.

Can I use leather conditioner on Alcantara?
Absolutely not! It'll flatten the pile and turn it into a greasy mess instantly. If you do this, you're in for a world of pain trying to clean it out.
How often should I clean my Alcantara wheel?
If it's your daily, I reckon give it a quick wipe with a damp (not wet) microfibre once a fortnight. It keeps the oils from building up so you don't have to do a deep clean as often.
My Alcantara is pilling (getting little bobbles), what do I do?
It happens as the fabric wears. You can actually use a fabric shaver (the kind the missus uses for her woolly jumpers) to very carefully remove them. Just don't go too ham or you'll thin the material out.
