Clean it like you mean it

Before you even think about putting a restorer on, you've gotta get the grime out. Use a decent APC (All Purpose Cleaner) and a soft brush to scrub the grain of the plastic. Most people just wipe over it, but the red dust gets trapped deep in the texture. If you don't get that out, your restorer will just sit on top of the dirt and peel off in a week. I reckon a toothbrush works wonders for the tight spots.

Don't fear the steel wool (on chrome!)

A customer once brought in an old Falcon with chrome bumpers that looked terminal. I used 0000 grade (has to be four zeros!) superfine steel wool and some metal polish. It's like magic for removing light pitting and oxidation. Just don't go near the paint with it, and for heaven's sake, make sure it's real metal and not that 'chrome-look' plastic found on modern cars. If you rub steel wool on plastic chrome, you're gonna have a bad time.

Ceramic is the only way to go

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with those 'back to black' gels from the servo. They're basically just mineral oil that attracts dust like a magnet. If you want it to last through an Aussie summer, use a dedicated trim ceramic coating like Gtechniq C4 or even Bowden's Own Mr Black if you're on a budget. It actually bonds to the plastic. It's more expensive, but you won't be redoing it every three weeks (your partner will thank you for not spending every Saturday in the driveway).

The Heat Gun Myth

You'll see blokes on YouTube using a blowtorch or heat gun to 'restore' plastic. Look, it works for about a month because it draws the remaining oils to the surface, but it actually makes the plastic more brittle in the long run. Made this mistake myself once, the trim looked great for a photo, then turned white and cracked two months later. Just stick to a quality restorer.

The Restoration Kit

Watch Out

Never apply trim restorers or metal polish on a surface that's hot to the touch. If it's a 40 degree day in Perth or Brissy, do it in the garage or wait until the arvo. If the product dries too fast, it'll streak and you'll be spending twice as long trying to buff it off. No dramas, just use your head.
