Bringing Your Exhaust Tips Back to Life

Most car owners make this harder than it needs to be. Here's the straightforward approach that actually works—no fluff, no upselling.

Dull, blackened exhaust tips ruin the look of a clean car. Here is the quick checklist to get them shining like new without scratching the finish.

Bringing Your Exhaust Tips Back to Life

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, nothing kills a fresh detail faster than crusty, soot-covered exhaust tips. Whether you are dealing with red dust from a trip out west or just months of carbon buildup on your daily, this guide covers the kit and steps you need. I've spent 15 years polishing everything from XR6 turbos to high-end Euro imports, and I reckon this is the most satisfying 20 minutes you can spend on your car.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
A dedicated bucket — Don't use your paint bucket for this; exhaust soot is nasty stuff.
Degreaser or APC — I usually grab Bowden's Own Orange Agent or similar.
Metal Polish — Autoglym Metal Polish is my go-to for most jobs.
0000 Grade Steel Wool — Only for heavy crust. Must be 'four-zero' grade or you'll scratch it to bits.
Microfibre towels (The 'Retirees') — Use your old, stained rags. These will be black by the end.
Wheel brush or small boars hair brush — Helpful for getting right inside the tip.
Nitrile gloves — Trust me, exhaust carbon is a nightmare to get out from under your fingernails.
A bottle of water — For rinsing (and for you, it's still bloody hot in March).
02

The 'Don't Mess It Up' Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Is the exhaust cold? — Touch the muffler first. I once saw a mate melt a microfibre onto a hot tip. Total nightmare.
Is it actually metal? — Check if it's just a plastic 'trim' piece. If it's plastic, don't use metal polish.
Is it Matte or Black Chrome? — If it's painted or matte black, skip the abrasives and just use soap.
Are you in the shade? — March sun will dry your chemicals instantly, leaving nasty streaks.

The Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Initial Rinse

Blast away loose grit and red dust with water. You don't want to be grinding sand into the metal in the next steps.

02

Degrease and Agitate

Spray your degreaser liberally. Let it dwell for a minute, then scrub with your brush. This gets the oily road film off.

03

The Heavy Lift

If there's thick carbon, use a small piece of 0000 steel wool with some polish as a lubricant. Scrape gently until the black spots vanish.

04

The Final Polish

Chuck some polish on a microfibre and work it into the metal until it turns black. Buff it off with a clean section of the rag.

05

Protective Wipe

Optional, but I reckon a quick wipe with a ceramic spray sealant helps stop the soot from sticking so hard next time.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Inner Rim check — Did you get the bottom edge? People always miss the underside.
Residue check — Make sure no white polish paste is dried in the gaps where the tip meets the pipe.
Reflection test — If you can't see your grin in it, give it one more hit with the polish.

Watch Out

Avoid using 'Eagle One' or harsh acid cleaners if your tips are nearby painted plastic bumpers, it'll stain the paint faster than you can say 'no dramas'. Also, never use coarse steel wool or kitchen scourers; I made that mistake on a black Commodore back in the day and spent three hours trying to polish out the scratches.

Pro Tip

If you've got a diesel rig with a DPF, you shouldn't have much soot. If you do, it's probably just road grime or red dust. A simple chemical cleaner like Meguiar’s NXT Metal Polish usually does the trick without needing the steel wool.
