Bringing Grey Plastics Back to Life

Aussie Conditions

Australian conditions are tougher than most—intense UV, red dust, coastal salt, and 40°C summers. European car care advice often doesn't cut it here.
Quick Summary

Look, we’ve all seen it, that black trim on the ute turns a nasty shade of grey because the UV here is basically a blowtorch. I once spent three hours trying to 'fix' a mate's faded flares with peanut butter (don't ask, it's a rubbish internet myth) and all it did was attract ants. This guide is the real-deal method for getting that factory finish back using stuff that actually lasts.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated trim restorer — Solution Finish is my top pick, or Bowden's Own Mr Black if you want local.
All-Purpose Cleaner (APC) or Degreaser — Need to strip the old waxes and road grime out of the pores.
Stiff nylon brush — A toothbrush-sized one works wonders for textured plastics.
Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) wipe — 50/50 mix with water to ensure the surface is chemically clean.
Microfibre applicators — Grab a 4-pack, you'll likely bin them after using permanent dyes.
Low-tack painter's tape — Essential if you don't want black stains on your white paint.
Disposable gloves — Trust me, trim dye takes days to scrub off your cuticles.
Clean microfibre cloths — A couple of 'retired' ones are fine for the final buff.

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Check the temperature — If the plastic is hot to the touch, she's too hot. Work in the shade.
Assess the damage — If the plastic is literally cracking or 'hairy', it's past a restorer and needs replacing.
Wash the car first — Don't try this on a dusty car. Get the red dirt out of the gaps first.
Check for wax residue — Look for white streaks from previous wax jobs, these must be scrubbed off.

Step-By-Step Restoration

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Deep Clean

Spray APC on the trim and scrub with your brush. You'll see brown gunk coming out. Rinse and dry thoroughly.

02

Mask Up

Tape off the paint around the plastic. I learned this the hard way on a white Ranger, trim dye is a nightmare to get off clearcoat.

03

IPA Wipe

Give the trim a final wipe with your alcohol mix. This removes any leftover soaps so the restorer can actually bond.

04

Apply Restorer

Put a few drops on your applicator and work it into the plastic using overlapping circles. A little goes a long way.

05

Level the Product

After 1-2 minutes, lightly buff the surface with a clean microfibre to remove any high spots or greasy-looking patches.

06

Cure Time

Keep it dry for at least 4 hours. If it rains 10 minutes after you finish, it'll streak. Check the BOM app first!

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Uniformity check — Look at the trim from different angles to ensure no patchy spots.
Tape removal — Pull the tape back at a sharp angle to avoid lifting any loose clearcoat.
Glass check — Make sure you didn't accidentally flick any product onto the windscreen.

Watch Out

Avoid silicone-based 'tyre shines' on interior or exterior trim. They look great for two days, then the sun cooks the silicone, turns the plastic even greyer, and attracts every bit of dust from the Simpson Desert. Also, never apply these products in direct 2pm Aussie sun, it'll flash off too fast and leave a streaky mess.
