Brake Dust Removal: The Pro’s Garage Checklist

Your car's interior cops more abuse than you realise—UV damage, spills, body oils, and the occasional fast food disaster. Here's how to fight back.

Caked-on brake dust is more than just an eyesore, it's corrosive and will eat your wheel's finish if left to bake in the Aussie sun. Here is exactly what you need to get them back to showroom quality without ruining your driveway.

Brake Dust Removal: The Pro’s Garage Checklist

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've spent 15 years scrubbing wheels and if there is one thing I've learned, it's that you don't want to be doing this in the midday sun. Between the red dust from outback trips and that salty coastal air, your rims take a beating. This checklist is the exact process I use in my shop to get rid of that nasty, metallic grime safely. Grab a cold one, get in the shade, and let’s get stuck in.

01

What You Need in the Bucket

What You'll Need

0/8
Dedicated Wheel Cleaner — Get a pH neutral one like Bowden’s Own Wheely Clean. It smells like rotten eggs but it works.
Iron Remover — Crucial for German cars. If it turns purple, you know it's working.
Soft-bristle Wheel Brush — Don't use the missus' old dish brush, it'll scratch the clear coat.
Barrel Brush — Something like a Wheel Woolie to get right to the back of the rim.
Detailing Brush — Small soft one for the lug nuts and valves.
Dedicated Wash Mitt — Never use your paint mitt on wheels. Ever. (I learned this on a black Commodore, total disaster).
Pressure Washer or Hose — A decent nozzle makes a massive difference for the inner barrels.
Microfibre Drying Towel — An old crappy one is fine, just make sure it's clean.

The 'Before You Spray' Check

What You'll Need

0/4
Wheels are cool to the touch — If you just got back from the shops, wait 20 mins. Cold water on hot rotors is a recipe for warping.
The car is in the shade — Cleaners drying in the 40-degree sun will leave permanent chemical stains.
Check for ceramic coating — If they're coated, you probably don't even need the heavy chemicals, just soapy water.
Rinse the driveway first — Trust me, iron removers can stain light-coloured concrete. Keep the ground wet.

The Cleaning Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Initial Pressure Rinse

Blast away the loose grit and red dust. Get right into the arches and behind the spokes to clear out any coastal salt buildup.

02

Apply Wheel Cleaner

Spray your cleaner (like Wheely Clean or Meguiar’s Ultimate) liberally. Start from the bottom and work up so it doesn't run and leave streaks.

03

Let it Dwell

Give it 2-3 minutes. You’ll see it reacting and turning purple. Don't let it dry out! If it's a hot arvo, mist a little water to keep it active.

04

Agitate the Grime

Use your barrel brush for the insides first, then the soft brush for the face. Work into the lug nut holes where the nasty stuff hides.

05

Final High-Pressure Rinse

Rinse thoroughly. I mean really thoroughly. If you leave chemical in the lug nuts, it'll dribble out later and ruin your hard work.

06

Dry the Wheels

Don't skip this. Water spots in Australia are a nightmare to remove once they bake on. Use a dedicated towel or a leaf blower.

Final Inspection & Pro Tips

Once you're done, run your finger behind a spoke. If it's still gritty, you've missed a spot. Personally, I reckon chucking a bit of spray sealant or wax on the wheels afterwards makes the next wash 10 times easier. A customer once brought in a Range Rover with wheels so caked I had to use a plastic scraper, don't let yours get that far gone!

Watch Out

Never use acid-based cleaners on 'chrome look' or unpainted polished aluminium wheels. It'll cloud the finish instantly and you'll be spending your weekend polishing it out by hand. Also, wear gloves, that iron remover stinks and stays on your skin for days.
