Bird and Bat Dropping Damage Prevention

Dirty car vents aren't just gross—they're blowing dust, allergens, and stale air right at your face. Every. Single. Drive.

Bird and bat droppings are basically acid on your paintwork, especially under the Aussie sun. Here is exactly what you need to keep in your boot to stop a permanent etch before it happens.

Bird and Bat Dropping Damage Prevention

Aussie Conditions

Aussie red dust is iron-rich and bonds to paint. A regular rinse won't cut it—you need proper pre-wash and pH-neutral soap to avoid scratching.
Quick Summary

Look, I've seen a black Commodore ruined in just four hours because the owner left a bat dropping on the bonnet in 40-degree heat. The acid literally eats into the clear coat as the paint expands. This guide is a quick checklist for every Aussie driver to keep their paint from getting scarred by the local wildlife.

01

The 'Wildlife Emergency' Kit

What You'll Need

0/8
High-lubricity Quick Detailer — I reckon Bowden's Own 'Fully Slick' or Meguiar's Quik Detailer are the best go-to options.
Plush Microfibre Towels — Keep at least 3-4 clean ones in a zip-lock bag so they don't get covered in red dust.
Distilled water in a spray bottle — Good for softening stubborn bits without leaving water spots from nasty tap water.
Waterless Wash concentrate — Something like P&S Absolute. It's extra slippery which is what you want.
Nitril gloves — Bat droppings in Queensland can carry some nasty bugs, don't touch 'em with bare hands.
Bug & Tar remover — Only for the really baked-on stuff, but use it sparingly.
Hand sanitiser — For you, not the car. Trust me, you'll want it after dealing with a big one.
Small bottle of spray wax — To top up protection on the spot you just cleaned.

Before You Touch the Paint

What You'll Need

0/3
Temperature check — Is the metal hot? If you're in the sun, move to the shade or wait for the panels to cool down.
Consistency check — Is it fresh or baked on? Baked stuff needs way more lubrication and patience.
Nearby debris — Check if there's red dust or salt spray on the rest of the panel. You don't want to drag that into the paint.
03

The Removal Steps

Tap each step to mark complete
01

Saturate the area

Don't just wipe it! Soak the dropping in detailer or water. Give it a good 2-3 minutes to soften up properly.

02

The 'Lift' Technique

Place a soaked microfibre over the spot. Gently pinch and lift the mess away. Never scrub back and forth or you'll scratch the clear coat.

03

Check for Etching

Once clean, look at the paint from an angle. If it looks blurry or wrinkled, the acid has already started eating the finish.

04

Neutralise and Protect

Give it one more spray of detailer to clean any residue, then hit it with a bit of spray wax to seal it back up.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Residue check — Run your finger (lightly!) or look closely for any 'ghosting' marks left behind.
Towel disposal — If it was a bat dropping, chuck that towel in a separate bag for a heavy wash or just bin it.
Glass check — If it hit the glass, make sure you didn't just smear it into the window seals.

Watch Out

Never, ever try to scrape a dry dropping off with your fingernail. I've seen guys do this at the servo and it leaves a permanent gouge every single time. Also, if you're dealing with bat droppings, wear a mask if it's dry and dusty, those things can carry Lyssavirus and other nasties that you don't want to be breathing in.

Expert Opinion

Honestly, if you live near a lot of trees, a ceramic coating is the best money you'll ever spend. It gives you a much bigger window of time to get the crap off before it burns through to the paint. I did my missus' car two years ago and it's saved the bonnet a dozen times already.
