Beach Trip Aftercare: The Post-Sand Interior Recovery

Aussie Conditions

Australian UV is 15% stronger than Europe. Your dash and leather need proper UV protection, not just cleaning, especially if you park outside.
Quick Summary

Look, we all love a run up Noosa North Shore or a weekend at Fraser, but the salt spray and sand will absolutely kill your interior if you leave it. I've seen three-year-old Landcruisers with rusted seat rails because the owners didn't bother with a proper clean-up. This list is my personal 'get it done right' routine I use for my mobile detailing clients.

01

The Gear You'll Need

What You'll Need

0/8
High-powered Vacuum — Don't bother with those weak cordless ones; you need a proper shop vac for sand.
Soft Drill Brush attachment — A total game changer for vibrating sand out of deep carpet fibres.
Interior APC (All Purpose Cleaner) — I reckon Bowden's Own 'Multi Purpose' is the best for our conditions.
Microfibre Cloths — Bring at least 5-6 clean ones. Don't be stingy.
AEROPRO or similar UV Protectant — Essential for the 40-degree Feb heat to stop your dash from cracking.
Small Detailing Brush — For getting sand out of the window switches and cup holders.
Compressed air (or a leaf blower) — Trust me, it's the only way to get sand out of the seat tracks.
Leather Cleaner/Conditioner — Only if you've got leather seats, salt air dries them out fast.
02

Pre-Start Checklist

What You'll Need

0/4
Park in the shade — If you apply cleaners to 50-degree plastic in the sun, it'll streak and ruin it.
Open all doors and the tailgate — Need that airflow or you'll bake while you work.
Pull out all floor mats — Chuck them on the driveway first so they can air out.
Empty the 'rubbish' bin — Check under the seats for any stray bait bags or prawn peels (learned that the hard way).
03

The Recovery Process

Tap each step to mark complete
01

The Blow Out

Use your air compressor or leaf blower to blast sand out from under the seats and between the console. It's messy, but it saves you hours of vacuuming.

02

Aggressive Vacuuming

Use the drill brush on the carpets while vacuuming. This vibrates the sand to the surface. I once spent 3 hours on a black Commodore because I skipped this.

03

Salt Neutralisation

Wipe down all hard surfaces with a damp microfibre and APC. Salt spray leaves a sticky film you can't see, but you'll definitely feel it later.

04

Seat Track Maintenance

Wipe the metal seat rails with a damp cloth. If you see salt crust, clean it off and apply a tiny dab of lithium grease so they don't seize.

05

UV Protection

Apply a quality UV sealant to the dash and door cards. In February, the Aussie sun will turn your trim grey in weeks without it.

06

Glass Clarity

Clean the inside of the windscreen twice. Salt air creates a hazy film that's dangerous when you're driving into a low afternoon sun.

04

Final Inspection

What You'll Need

0/3
Check the 'Sand Trap' — Look in the seat belt mechanism and the rubber door seals.
Smell Test — If it smells like 'wet dog' or 'old bait', you've missed a spot in the carpet.
The Touch Test — Run your hand over the dash. If it feels grainy, go again with the APC.

Watch Out

Do NOT use 'shiny' silicone-based dressings on your dash; the glare off the Aussie sun will blind you. Also, never leave damp beach towels on leather seats, the salt and moisture will cause the leather to shrink and crack faster than you can say 'no dramas'.
05

Detailer's Note

Honestly, don't put this off till next weekend. A mate of mine left sand in his Hilux for a month and the salt actually started pitting the metal trim around his shifter. It's a pain in the arse to do after a long drive, but your resale value will thank you for it. Give it a crack and you'll be sweet.
